I'm shipping a 2x12 and the package is about 36"x24"x22". Cheapest shipping looks like UPS (yuck) at 71 USD, which seems a bit high to ship. It's going from Tennessee to Seattle. Someone point me in the right direct to get this thing shipped.

I've wondered about that. I bet it wouldn't be cheaper because they charge you a rate based on size and weight - if it oversized, they charge you a rated-weight based on the weight of a heavier package regardless of what it actually weighs.

Sounds cheap. It cost me $170 to ship a 412 in which it was destroyed by UPS

Fedex Ground is cheaper than UPS. Your box size is the determining factor in the charge, not the weight when it gets that big.

My 4x12 shipping boxes are 36x36x18, and can run from $130 within the state of Calfornia, to $160 coast to coast (plus the packing costs, of course). So you can't tell me they can ship a 105 lb box 3000 miles for $30 more than a 3-400 mile trip within California, right?

Shipping the speaker separately WILL NOT be cheaper, you'll pay $35-40 to ship them, plus the cabinet.

Leave them in the cabinet.

Not sure what you're using to pack, but I get 1" thick Insulfoam from Home Depot to pack my cabs. It's tough, lightweight, any you can cut it easily with a razor knife to fit your box. A 2-3" thickness has protected cabs to all locations on the globe. Ask SteveK, I shipped his NAKED cab to Saudi Arabia without a problem.

I have shipped 3 4x12s and 1 4x10 and it has always sucked.

You already feel like shit about how much you spent on all the packing supplies - Box (good luck on finding one that's just the right size for a 4x12 cab ), packing tape, styrofoam, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, more packing tape (because you used a shit-load more than you thought you were going to when you turned the 2 "Kind of big" boxes you bought at the U-Haul store (for the low low price of $10.00 a piece!) into 1 "Big enough" box because you didn't have any of that previously mentioned good luck finding one that's just the right size for a 4x12 cab) - Then you take it down to Fed-Ex or UPS (and kill yourself in the process because your box now weighs almost 100 lbs) and find out that the amount you spent on supplies was nothing (NOTHING!) compared to what it's going to cost to send it half way across the country to that jack-hole who won it on Ebay that you only charged $50.00 for shipping because you thought "It can't be that much to send it. I'll just get a box, pack it and take it down to UPS, no problem.".


Yeah, shipping cabs sucks.

Yeah I've wondered about it myself, I've heard guys here on the boards that have said that it was the case but I don't have any experience with it. I wouldn't ship a cab anyway, just wouldn't be worth the trouble for me. Looks like Jim says it's a myth and with his experience I'll take his word for it

What are the cab's dimensions?

Is the 36" dimension for the carton length? If so, it looks to me as if you'll need to add a bit more height to the carton, to allow for more internal packing materials. 24" OR 22" for carton height would be too short for most 2x12's IMO, and will need more packing materials, to prevent the carton top from being crushed. I'd suggest a carton height at least 29" high. And be sure to over protect the front of the cab....maybe get yourself some triple wall to add in addition to the suggested foam.

Jimbo & the others are right on track...ship the speakers with the cab. You have more cost with two shipments, not to mention an additional shipment is just another opportunity for the shipping Co. to mukk up or lose another carton.

For a 4x12 at least, there really isn't much cost difference...it's the carton size, and i think that'd be the case with the 212 carton for you, too.

The cabinet is 30"x18"x14", so there's there's 6 inches of padding at least. I've packed it with loads of tape and bubble wrap, and fashioned some triangle braces out of extra cardboard for the inside of the box as well. I'm confident with the package, just the shipping cost is a problem. FedEx online quoted me slightly over 100 USD compared to UPS 71 USD.

Open an account with Fedex and you'll get better rates. The account is free, just need a credit card to auto-bill to.

Guaranteed you go the a UPS store and it will be alot more than the on-line quote. I've always found fed ex to be cheaper and less damaging than UPS.

I would ONLY use FedEx ground. They are a bit cheaper, and do a better job. They are also better to deal with regarding claims.

Last cab I shipped was from Vancouver to Boca Raton FLA. LONG HAUL!! I went the UPS route, as they were the closest outlet to the (and this is the most important part)....

The custom packing shop!!

Ya, I went with a custom packing shop - the guy made custom boxes, to double box it, with perfectly cut foam inserts front back sides top and bottom, perfect fit. It was awesome, he even put a moisture wicking wrap around it. Anyway, whole process took about 1 hour to have done, and I took pictures of the progress. I thought - shit man, this is gonna cost me a LOT!!! Ended up costing $70 and I was blown away... Then to UPS, which kindly took as much money as they could... When it showed up in FLA, the guy was SO impressed with the packaging and care I took in getting the cab there (a brand new UberKab 4x12) that he reimbursed me the cash it cost to package, and about 50% of my share of the UPS bill!! (We went 50/50 on shipping fees)

Gotta say, it's the first time EVER I've seen a cab leave my possession and KNEW it was going to be fine upon arrival.

The dude who packed it up knew a lot about crate shipments and the like. He said "oh ya, those boxes that these cabs come in, with their little styro corners and single seam cardboard, ya, they're designed to be shipped on a pallet, and anything after that is game over. The funny thing is, the music companies save a lot of money on shipping by using crap cardboard and shipping supplies, but then they already account for x out 100 cabs to be damaged in shipping, it's just business to them....".
