Jake and Ozzy...

EVH didn't need any years of tech advancement to have amazing tone. I love RR, he was my number 1 in 1982, but his tone was not the greatest and there is no excuse in my book.
Excellent point, made all the better by a producer that actually knew what he was doing. Max was just an engineer that got pulled in after the original producer bounced. Further I don't think Randy's speaker choice helped all that much either. I also don't think Randy was as gear advanced as Ed was during that time, just look at the amps he was using with Quiet Riot. At least his Marshall was a step in the right direction and I do think had he lived his tone would have obviously improved.

Still growing up during that time, and as a young guitarist myself, Ed's tone had yet to become the legend and aftermarket icon that it is now.

Oh IDK for a 43 yr old song sounds pretty Fuckin amazing & relevant to me.
If not there's always Katy Perry & Jelly Roll.
Some you blokes have 1981 music gear availability amnesia.

Said this the other day in another thread from the 1:46 part to the end of the song is pure perfection and I especially love that harmonic he pulls at the 3:02 mark, still hits me today like it did all those years ago. Then the whole ride out of the song from the 3:35 mark is just brilliant in it's imagery. Easily one of Ozzy's most underrated songs. Stuff like this, Revelation, Diary, Crowley etc... Ozzy just never got near that with anything else in terms of epicness.

Good story, I had/have cool parents especially my Mom when it came to music. Her painting office was right next to my room so she heard my music cranked all the time, she loved Journey. But one day I've got the Crowley intro cranked and she comes in and goes, what's with this Vincent Price shit. I still laugh when I think about that.

I think Jake and Ozzy would have been close had the timing been different. Had he been selected at the time Randy was, I think it would have been very different. Ozzy was depressed and bitter about losing Randy, so whoever got hired in that role, was going to get shit on. Metallica did the same thing to Jason. By the time Zakk was hired, I think enough time had passed for Ozzy to not be bitter about Randy's death.

I’m conflicted by the whole Ozzy thing. He and Sharon fucked too many people. Randy was my guy and then I loved Jake too. So I really, really love those first few solo records. But I just can’t forget/forgive SharOzzy for being total pieces of shit.

I mean, how many potato chips can you eat? Ozzy died a filthy rich man. A tiny portion of it to Daisley, RR estate, and Jake would have made zero difference to them.

14 minutes of Jake shredding it up........................

Another factor for me was The Osbournes. Doing a reality TV show cheapened Ozzy's image and legacy in my eyes. After that show a sense of mystery around his image was lost.

Yep it's an interesting dichotomy. I just have to put myself back in that place when I first heard those songs from those first three albums, it was amazing and tune out the greed of Ozzy and Sharon. But yeah I had to break from Ozzy years ago myself because of all the things that came to light with the greed. There was enough to go around, especially to people that basically gave you a career after Sabbath.

Possibly. I do agree that he had to deal with Ozzy on a level others hadn't because of RR's passing but then again he was your typical high and low of an alcoholic. I mean the dude punched Randy, he punched Rudy, he sent Don Acosta to the hospital.

I also think, and this is why I started the thread, Jake is quite a bit aloof. He may just not connect with people on that level. I mean he certainly doesn't understand how revered he is by the fans for his time on Ozzy, you can read that in the interview. I mean even if Jake wasn't your favorite in Ozzy, nobody has anything bad to say about him, which is really quite different from Zakk who has alot of detractors.

For me Jake was an amazing player with a great look, stage presence and easily stands up technique/skill wise with Randy and Zakk, but... I never thought the riffs were as memorable as the other two and his tone wasn't that great on his two albums (Not entirely his fault of course).

Btw, Rock n' Roll Rebel is one of my favourite Ozzy songs, what a tune!

Certainly I rate Randy above Jake and Zakk. And I pretty much agree with everything else you said here. I’m not as enamored with Jake’s guitar playing as some guys here but as a person I think he’s one of the coolest guys on the planet. And Zakk? I don’t know man. Those videos of him when he was young and doing Sabbath covers are pretty cool, but god damn, enough with the pinch harmonics. Once in awhile it can be cool, but he’s the poster child for using it inappropriately.

I like Zakk's first album the best. Too many damn pitch harmonics, but at least the rhythms and solos were fun. It seems his tone got worse with every album after the first one.
