You think you can sing the same 30 years from now? Doubt it and I don't know any other that can either.?

David Coverdale, for one.

Best one I've heard in a while

I think his recent live DVDs were pretty impressive. Haven't been to a show in person. :dunno:

That's because all the vocal tracks you hear on DVD were recorded in studio

Ouch. I didn't know that

Neither has Iron Maiden.

Neither have any of the big shows touring the world to sold out audiences. So what. You're saying they should all hang it up and go into retirement?

Ridiculous. How old are you man?

Really? Fear of the Dark, Brave New World, Dance of Death...all post-1988. I'd put them up against Load, Reload, St. Anger and Death Magnetic (which, incidentally, has the worst album name ever) any day.

I'm saying that if a band is clearly creatively moribund, they should call it a day. Tour - sure, fine, but don't record any shitty new music and describe it as the "best thing we've ever done". Even Opeth, who I love, should really have ended it after Watershed when Mikael decided he didn't like metal anymore.

My age is both (a) irrelevant and (b) none of your business.

We need a new expression.

Instead of "those that can't, teach", seems should be upgraded to...

"those that can't, get on the internet and claim those that can, shouldn't, for some fucking reason".

To the prior comment on Death Magnetic being a terrible disc. A few facts for the Internet Guitar Gods.

Death Magnetic debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, selling 490,000 copies in just three days of availability.[87] It is the band's fifth consecutive studio album to debut at #1, making Metallica the first band to have five consecutive studio album releases to do so. The album marked the highest first week sales for the group since 1996's Load.[6][88]
According to Billboard Magazine, in the September 27, 2008 issue, Death Magnetic landed at #1 on the following ten charts: Billboard Top 200, Billboard Comprehensive Albums, Top Rock Albums, Top Hard Rock Albums, Top Modern Rock/Alternative Albums, Top Digital Albums, Top Internet Albums, Top European Albums, Tastemakers, and Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks ("The Day That Never Comes").[89] The album stayed at #1 for three consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200, and spent 50 consecutive weeks on said chart.[90] Internationally, it peaked at #1 in 34 countries, including Ireland, the UK, Canada and Australia.[91]
According to The Rock (a New Zealand radio station) the album became platinum on the first day of its release in New Zealand.[citation needed] In addition, nearly 60,000 copies were sold digitally, making it debut at #1 on the Digital Album chart.[92] The album debuted at #1 on the UK albums chart after just three days of availability, selling 75,164 copies. It remained at #1 for two weeks and has sold over 150,000 copies to date.[93] In Canada, Death Magnetic debuted at #1 on the Canadian Albums Chart.[94] It sold 81,000 copies in its first week, making it the second best-selling debut album of 2008 in Canada.[95] It remained the #1 album for four consecutive weeks.[96] The album was certified 4x platinum in Canada in October 2009.[97]
In Australia, Death Magnetic was the fastest selling album of 2008, selling 55,877 copies in its first full week of release.[98] Death Magnetic was Australia's highest-selling record in one week since Australian Idol winner Damien Leith's The Winner's Journey, in December 2006.[99] The same success was repeated in Germany, where Death Magnetic has become the fastest selling album of 2008. Within the first three days of the album's release, Death Magnetic sold over 100,000 copies and has been certified platinum.[100] According to reports, Death Magnetic is outselling competitors in Russia and Turkey, two countries which don't have an official album chart.[101]
In Finland, during the second week of January 2009, Death Magnetic jumped eighteen spots back up to #1 on that country's album charts within one week.[102] As of August 2010 the album has sold more than 4.5 million copies worldwide.
Death Magnetic was certified 2x platinum (two million units sold) by the RIAA on June 28, 2010.[103]

I remember up to about 1990 or so, pretty much only metal heads liked Metallica. After the Black Album, all of a sudden all these dweebs who liked REM and U2, The Cure, etc were buying Metallica albums. I was like, wait a minute, this bands represented a fan base that hated everything about you. WTF happened?

I really used to dig Metallica. Born in '81 so they were one of the first bands I really got into at a young age, along with Queensryche, GNR, etc.. Obviously musicians change and evolve and I get and respect that. I like Load and Garage Days. Dug the s&m thing too but after that they really lost their way creatively. Sure they sold a shitload of albums with st anger and DM but I don't think they really had anything to offer musically and I honestly thought both records were pretty bad. Few good moments on DM..

Who's to tell them to quit now when they are still running a successful business? Sure I get that. Musically speaking on the other hand, they haven't had my interest for many years. Bands are only hungry for it and creative for so long. Few can still pump out interesting stuff after they've said what they've needed to say. James is an icon either way and it's impressive that any band can endure. However, at some point it's not as much about the 'art' as it is about cashing in. Put it this way, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if Metallica, Opeth, Tool, Queensryche, Foo Fighters, Megadeth, Smashing Pumpkins etc were to hang it up tomorrow. Every mediocre release a band puts out sort of takes away from the great ones that made me love them in the first place. Rant over. Damn, I told myself I wasn't going to comment on this thread again.

I like REM and The Cure (U2 not so much, but anyway)...I also like Meshuggah and Gojira and Mastodon and Opeth. So, I guess the appeal of some combination of Metallica's songs and/or shows was enough overcome the narrow-mindedness of a segment of its fanbase. It's not high school...

The thing is, they weren't putting out "Master of Puppets" for free. They've always been in it to sell records/tickets. As is any band by the time you've heard of them. Seems like the definition of "great art" in a lot of cases is "the stuff I like." So basically it only amounts to saying you like one album over the other, which is fine, but probably not a good reason to criticize someone for continuing to have a career.

Don't go confusing this conversation with facts and statistics please.

Lets just go with some Internet superstar/critic says. Metallica should just forget about the hundreds of people they employ, tens of millions of dollars they generate every year and throw in the towel.

EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING LAST NIGHT!

Hetfield is an amazing guitarist. I never cared for his voice (his voice does fit the music though) but his songwriting and guitar playing are/were stellar. I've never seen them live but I hear they're still an amazing show. To me, St Anger and DM were unlistenable because I couldn't get over how horrible the mastering was. It literally hurts me to listen to it. Those guys themselves have probably lost their hearing if that's what they wanted it to sound like.

BTW, Chris Cornell and Maynard James Keenan are about the same age as Hetfield. Their voices are as good as they ever were--Cornell's is a bit more raspy now but he can hit everything with power, and still does it live and over a two hour set. Maynard doesn't do Grudge or Ticks & Leeches style screams live but still has a very versatile voice. Mike Patton is only 5 years younger and is still doing RIDICULOUS stuff--his voice isn't the nasally, somewhat annoying voice it was for the first Bungle and his first two FNM albums, but he can still do it (listen to the newest Tomahawk album, he sounds like that from time to time). Saw Tomahawk live a few weeks ago--his voice is still awesome. And he's been touring the world seemingly non-stop since he was 21.

It is funny how other musicians will slag them, but let a chance to be the opening band for Metallica come up for grabs! It is the chance of a lifetime... The kind of thing that can launch a career.

At the end of the day Metallica has made many many millions for themselves, and even more for all of the others on the Train. I love it when a Metal band has 5 debut number one albums in a row. Our brand of music is not dead yet despite disco, rap, grunge, emo douchery, and Coldplay... People are still banging it out to the various incarnations of Metallica. I like Broken Beat and Scarred of Death. Killer tune. A big fuck you to the detractors as well.

Like they themselves say, sure they sell out, every show...all around the world.

Long live the king!

cornell could never come close to hitting his notes live even back in the 80s. much like metallica, people praise cornell live and im not sure im watching/hearing the same thing sometimes  for how epic both bands are on record, they leave a lot to be desired live in my opinion, and it bums me out cause they are two of my favorite bands.

He commands a "presence" because of his position. If he wasn't in Metallica and waked into a room who'd give a shit. Anyone, in any position of power commands a presence from those who don't have that power.

No opinion about whether that's good or bad, or any judgement on James - just a statement of human nature.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for the things James has done musically. He is one of the players that made me want to play heavy music.
