This is actually a great for you! I know a lot of guys are/were probably concerned that if they had a mod5 done on there amp that it would not sound like your clips and This clip clearly shows that it has THE sound! Well done

If I am being honest, Part of the reason why I never bought a peacemaker was because no one else but Vic was able to get the sound I was looking for.

All the best and I wish you much success.

Gainfreak, yes!

its always funny to me when someone takes the argument of "tone is in the hands" to an extreme. at the same time that I agree with it, i don't take it as far as some would like to or get lost in the analogy of it. ( i have seen the naysayers post at times that "rockstah just has the touch" or "rockstah has the recording technique" etc. )

Eddy would sound like himself on a fender twin but he sounds like Edward Van Halen in part because of the particular tools he used. they go hand in hand.

anyway this clip is, in part, for all the individuals that don't realize they are making an argument where there isn't one. i set the amp up to have that sound and if one wants to achieve that sound its a tool to reach for.

Not sure I ever read your opinion Rockstah-What was Eddie using VH1? You've been doing these mods for a while now. What do you think was going on?

I think the whole tone in the hands thing is confusing because there is some truth to it but some people take it to the extreme and think that every ounce or 100% of your tone comes from your fingers and not the gear and that is complete crap.

Anyone with ears can tell that Eddie sounds different through the 5150 vs the Golden Marshall. His technique will be the same and that's how you know when Ed is playing but the TONE?...hell no, its not the same and if people can't hear the difference then I don't know what to say lol. Everyone Ive heard play through a rockman has sounded like they are playing through a rockman, There aint no magical hands in the world that can mask that fact.

Gear will make a difference in your tone and of course hands/technique will also make a difference but to say it comes 100% from either is assanine

All IMHO of course ~R~

That tone is in your hands arguments is total bullshit. Period. Nuances, technique, dynamics, phrasing, timing is in the person but noone can make chicken salad from chicken shit. A good player with a good ear for tone can make the best out of what he is playing but it will not sound as good as if he were playing with great tone to start with. When I listen to early Van Halen I can tell that he is playing a Marshall with diode clipping. I can hear it in the note separtion and attack.

I've always thought this is what "tone is in the fingers" argument meant, and not some consequence of a persons flesh and bones.

Rockstah, I'm always interested in what was used to record these clips. What is the speaker, what is the mic, and what part of the speaker were you mic'ing?

Sounds killer! - The MOD5 records Classic VH tone to perfection to me (and at a reasonable volume!)...

(as long as you can play the tunes with Ed's feel and use the proper effects, of course - the guy playing on this clip has some good VH feel and the reverb sound right, if a little much...)

Thanks guys! you're asking a question that know one really knows..... what did Edward use and how did he run things?.... remains a mystery!
