Jem or Not?

I would do it if the guitar is in great shape. It worth more on the market than a Mark V.

Do people still play Jems? Honest question.
Do they gig with them?
I haven't seen anyone use them in years.

Closet nerdy Vai fans do
They also own all the Eventide H3000 units out there ;)

I sure wouldn't do it. I'm not sure what they are going for nowadays, but I see more value in the amp. Then again, I just think Jems are over valued. If anything, I'd try to trade for a J-Custom.

Thanks for the replies guys

Seems everywhere else the guitar is around 1500$
In the province all adds I see are 2000$
Weird market

Bad trade unless you actually want the Jem, and even then you could sell the Mark V and should be able to buy that Jem with money left over.

Just because they are all asking $2,000 doesn't mean they're getting it.

Back around '91 I had the JEM with the green vine inlays, flower wallpaper finish and pink DiMarzios. Maybe it was the first model? I don't know. Regardless, and of course this is my opinion, but I thought the guitar sounded like cardboard shit. It was too light in weight to have any beefiness to its tone. To this day, I have steered clear of guitars with basswood bodies.

In summary, I wouldn't do that trade.

I agree!!! I have played a few of these and owned at least one Ibanez basswood body guitars and I think they do sound like shit. I never have owned a full basswood body guitar since.

JEM777FP, not the first Jem model, but a long-running one

The only reason I'd make this trade is if I can make a profit, which doesn't seem likely according to you guys
(Ok I admit I'd take a few pictures with it, with unbuttoned shirt and wind blowing in my almost non-existent hair)

You're not the only one. I've felt that way myself with most of the Jems I've played in the past.

Speaking of which, does Vai have a signature fan yet....one that blows his hair back just right?
