I'm a wicked Page geek--I know about the KT88s and after having a half dozen or so Marshalls tweaked to take 'em, I agree that's a part of the equation. Let's of folks are adamant Jimmy was FOS about that and his superlead had el34's at the Garden in 73--Doug Roccaforte comes to mind. Regardless, this amp could have been tweaked multiple times but there is no reason to believe Jimmy had a fleet of them--he was notoriously cheap.

I believe Jimmy had his main SL and then later got a super bass as a backup. I always thought he switched to this amp during the 77 tour, as his tone was much cleaner then.

Zep recorded LZII while on the road in a number of studios so I assume he
was using his #1 live amp for tracking. What would that one have been?

He got the SL first for reliability Issues then allegedly a super bass later as a back up but AFAIK the MSG SL was his #1 and was on Zep II-Presence. Of course they both look the same. I remember Doug R zooming in on blurry pics of the tubes in the SL on TSRTS. KT88s in a Marshall just sound like Page IMO
 
One thing about Page always seemed interesting to me is that he kind of stuck with the tools he had for the most part. Sure you can hear some pedals and such over the years but the guitars were pretty much the Tele, LP, and the Danelectro on most of the stuff they did. Dude had the $$ to play a different guitar for each tune ha. He did an awful lot and got an awful lot of sounds with that basic set up.

If you ever get a chance to plug in to one of those old Supros, or even a low wattage late 50s/early 60s Gretsch, do it…..
They sound like an amp on the verge of meltdown; and in a good way. Those early low wattage amps can sound killer.
 
could have used some subtitles with that accent

I remember watching a vid about how it was modded....might have been the supro guys talking about his limited edition model. Remember them saying it was not exact because the original fell out of a truck and was repaired...or something to that effect. It's amazing the tools that we have at our disposal and these guys were recording these albums basically on 4 tracks back in the day.

I remember seeing this vid too, I think they put bigger tubes in it or something so it’s not really the “small” wattage amp that it started as or something among other mods

You tried one of the those Gretsch’s or Supro’s recently? I can even do some styles of metal on them boosted and with the right pickups. I still wanna get a ‘50’s tweed champ (best of the bunch imo). Super ballsy and probably still the most raw sounding amp I’ve tried so far (at least a good example of one). I tried last year at TR Crandall a ‘57 champ with my DF loaded Charvel guitar and it was more ballsy than the vintage 20w amps compared there. Shoulda bought it probably lol

I finally did get to try a Gretsch like the one you have; a while back at a MGR. They wanted 1200 for it so I passed lol but it was a cool sound.

Yeah $1200 is high. IME they vary a lot, but Dan’s and a few others were really good, but that ‘50’s champ I tried at TR Crandall last year imo killed them for me but also more than twice the price :(

I used to think the Deluxe’s were the best sounding tweeds vs the bigger brothers (twin, bassman, Vibrolux, Harvard (not bigger brother but still)), but now for me it’s been that champ and Dan’s 50’s Princeton tweed (also ~5 watts). His Princeton wasn’t ballsy or aggressive like the champ, but exceptionally warm and pretty/lush sounding
