OK Dave i know you dislike JJ pre's for high gain, me and everyone i know can agree on that, but i did have JJ pre's in a 70's Silverface Twin that sounded OK for cleen.

What are the diferences between JJ & Winged =C= power tubes for Friedman JMPs ?

FWIW about 5 years ago i had JJ 6L6's in an amp that were OK.

And what should i ask Laura the Valve Queen to hook me up with regarding JJ's ?

JJ's seem smoother and darker sounding to me. The Winged C's have more bite and attack.

Well i don't want to lose any bite or attack ... my amp is articulate as a MoFo.

The jj tubes have a bit more classic Marshall mid and I like that. Both are good. Get them from Valve Queen for sure. No one tests and burns in tubes like her.

I don't hear that. I hear the JJ's darkening that classic Marshall mid but I guess everyone hears differently.

If you do want a set of JJ's I've got a brand new very closely matched quad of EL34L's I'll sell.

I heard the Tung-sol 34's are good as well.

My =C='s are coming up on 5 years old and show no sign of slowing down but i may replace them this year anyway.

I use NOS Blacburn Mullards & Amperex in the pre ...

That's my take on it as well. On my Jet City Earhart (Cornford MK50H II), I just switched from the JJ EL34L to =C= EL34. Punches through better with a little more bite. The JJ's aren't bad at all, but those 2 sets of tubes are at the top of my list.

=C= tubes are fucking hot though. Every pair I've had (3 different amps, too) I've had to turn the bias knob way down otherwise it'll redplate right out of the gate.

The OP mentioned the JJ 6CA7's in the title. Different tube than the E34L. I do not prefer the 6CA7. I think Dave has stated the same somewhere else here. If you are looking at new 6CA7 go EH. Tried the JJ E34L in my original '72 Marshall JMP (came with it straight from YJM's past manager) and did not prefer it to a couple others I tested. That tube has something going on with it in the upper mids that do not make it as musical sounding as the JJ EL34 that comes stock in the BE100. Aside from the upper mids meets lower high frequencies spike, it seemed to have a bit of a scooped mid section inherent in its quality. Those tubes really have to be pushed hard before you get good compression and gain out of them. They have a rather high headroom. For example, on a NMV Marshall the volume could be at around 6 to get the amp to compress smoothly and get good gain with another tube whereas, the E34L's I found that the volume would have to be at at least 7.5-8 before getting to similar ground. Have not tried in it in my BE but I believe Dave went with the JJ EL34 for better tone.

Just so everybody knows the jje34l and el34 is the same tube. It's just the e34l tests better.

Interesting. And they claim it has an extended low end over the el34. Groove Tube claims their el34 is a JJ e34l with heat wings added. I think I preferred that one to the JJ's

I am pretty certain they are not the same tube. The JJ34L is more rugged, tests better, has more headroom than the JJEL34 with the qualities I stated previously. I know they do not sound the same as the JJEL34's in the same circuit.

Got a SS100 Friedman with stock ARS EL34 , sound great ! Try winged C in place and finaly , after 2 hours , come back to ARS Stock because it sound better ... Less agressive but all you need for a very good sound .

The JJ E34L definitely has more low end than the EL34...it's readily apparent in my Matchless Chieftain (much more so than in other amps that I've tried them in). Not necessarily a good thing IMO...can make an amp too "boomy" sounding.
