Ive always found it hysterical how the 2210 and 2205's always used to get panned by hardcore Marshall enthusiasts because of the diode clipping. I've always liked the tones that you could get out of them and I always shook my head when I heard people bitching about the diodes.

Yeah Ralph, it's stupid that people associate diodes with bad tone or whatever. Yet many of the famed mods that so many guys have had in their Marshall amps over the years, have included diodes in the circuit to get that sound. Diodes can sound killer when used effectively!!

I was wondering what cabs he used? Loaded with G12-75's or V30's or Greenbacks...anybody know?

I missed your post before this one! In the more recent years, and during the last two Europe tours.. he has been using V30's in his cabs. No idea about before then though! Maybe Mark C knows, i havent heard back from him yet but hes busy so it may not be for a while!

Lots of guys would tour with V30's or high wattage speakers but they would record with greenbacks or h30's.

When I listen to the Dokken album with Billy White and John Norum, Im hearing the greenback knock in the recorded tone but I could be wrong!!

I also know that Mark told me that Prior to John using his mods, that Norum used a tube screamer and Marshall combination. not sure of the speakers though!!

Ralph, you're not the only one hearing greenbacks on the Don Dokken album. Im plugging straight into the Boogie MKIII and using my 4x12 with greenies, and its getting an extremely close tone to Billy White on that cd!! I played the solo earlier to The Hunger, and i was atleast 90% of the way there tonewise!

Also i heard too about John using a Marshall Plexi or superlead, with one or two tubescreamers in series hitting the front end!

Thanks guys. I forgot to check back on this thread as well.

I've still got my 50W Avenger but just picked up, about 2 - 3 days before this thread actually, a Marshall JCM 800 4212; which is basically a 2205 in a 2x12 combo. It's a latter '80's version (more gain) like I had bought new in '89 and sold a few years later

Sounds killer with the Gain maxed and the Preamp volume maxed out as well; then Master to taste or as much as your neighbor will stand  The thing sounds just like I remember; freaking HUGE!

Hi Mark,

Glad to see you make it back to the room for a chat. I can't wait for my new CCV-100. I can only dream of the tone and hours of playtime. Any word when they will begin to ship? Not sure where I fit in the oder of merit but I paid Chris in full plus shipping a couple months back. Take care, have a tall galss of Merlot on me. I'll be out of IRAQ in late October, been sober since March. Like a long AA meeting with bullets flying!

Final Destination is the Norum Mod Marshall used on that CD. Aldrich borrowed it for some "Bad Moon records" pretty sure as I heard that from Mark. The Aldrich mod is really the Norum Mod, Aldrich borrowed Norums head to record some records and so the "Aldrich" name stuck.

Just read a new interview with norum and he was asked what amp used on face the truth.
It's Soldano slo on clean channel and a Marshall Guvn´r Overdrive.
He also say all rhythm guitars was gibson les paul custom and all solos was made with a Arvidsson strat other than 2 songs he used his old 65 strat.

Interview can be found here but it's in swedish.

I wonder if he means Slo on the "crunch" channel boosted with a guvnor alla Gary Moore. A few people went that route with great success in the late 80's and early 90's.

Dale, I was at that show as well. Was in a cover band at the time from NM playing in Denver. Wasn't it on a Sunday? He was so killer, Billy White was no slouch as well. I'm such a huge Norum fan. His playing, tone, singing.

Dan,
I had the chance to see John Norum live with DOKKEN in a small club in DENVER it was a great show, I e-mailed Mark before about John's rig and he told me he used a stock JCM 800 with either KT-77 or KT-88 tubes? He couldnt remember at the time, maybe some merlot was in the way but thats what he had said to me. I cant wait for my CCV-100. Anyone hear when they will finally ship? I ship out of IRAQ in late October so I have time. But I cant wait. We have a planning consideration in my unit for combat operations "Dont rush to failure" so maybe Mark is getting all aspects exactly how he expects them! I would like to see your collection of Norum CD's

Dale

Actually Mark just wanted a better higher gain sound from a Marshall back in the late 80's, early nineties. His original modded amp had no name at first. He knew John Norum and John liked the amp so Mark let him use it on Another Destination. Mark told me he helped John record the album and most was done in one take. The mod still had no name to per say. After this Mark did the mod for John in an early SLP donor amp. Michele, Johns Wife wanted one too so he did a JMP for her. After that Mark loaned his amp to Doug. He asked Doug if he could call it the Aldrich and Doug said sure. This might not be exactly accurate but it's close.
