Mine too!!! 8/12/74 is my birthday...!!! Small world!!!

To me though, Coverdale always fucked Sykes on mixes. Look at 1987 Whitesnake....John's leads were way back in the mix on Still of the Night. He always had the keys too loud that fucker. Coverdale should remix that shit, or send it to me and let me have a go at mixdown. Snakey son of a Bitch! No one puts Sykes in the corner!

Sykes is so ridiculous. Awesome chops and tone. A total hero of mine since forever.

I agree about the keyboard mixes in the WS Sykes-era stuff...way too friggin' high in the mix for sure.

Look's like Sykes had been checking out Gary Moore a lot back then. GM used the same color strat a lot around this time and the intro playing is very GM.

Sykes is the man. He's one of the few guys that can go shred-bananas, and it still sounds like rock and roll, and not some brainy wanking.

I've never actually seen him play a whammy bar before. I know he did, but never seen it. Coool.

Why did Dave fire this team... well, it's hard to argue with the 'video success' that WS had, but dude, that trio was sick-o bad-ass!!!

I had the good fortune to work with Sykes on his last live record...it was guitar heaven.

Give us a rundown on his gear!!!?????

Well that's an easy one:

THE Les Paul, into one of his Jose (at least I think it was a Jose) Marshall JCM800's, two Roland JC-120's for cleans and a cable.

He's like Eric Johnson being able to identify the smallest changes in his signal path. He made the poor guitar tech run out mid-show, to patch in an A/B box on songs that needed clean sounds... then run back, and unpatch it for songs without. MAD!!!

He used a new Les Paul goldtop too for drop D on Valley of the Kings, but man... to me, it couldn't hold a candle to his main.

In his studio he has his Marshalls, old Mesa stuff, and pedals, his main LP, vintage strats, etc. It was like being left alone with Mona Lisa (to me anyway).

[edited...removed "it was an A/B box, and not a wah pedal"... sorry]

So his main LP is the bomb eh? Does he use EL34s in his Marshalls or 6550? Does he use chorus or flanger? Any effects at all?

I think it's that synergy when I guy finds the perfect guitar for his 'guitar voice'. Sorry, I can't remember what tubes he was using. It was a while back, when I wasn't as detailed about amps. No effects at all while playing live. The sound guy would bring in a little delay for big solo moments, but nothing at the amp.

If I remember correctly, we used an AMS Delay for his stereo chorus/spreading effect.

Don't know what an AMS Delay is but... he does use some Chorus then?

It was one of these bad-boys (no pun intended). They are old, and go for about $3k, which is bonkers to put in a guitar rig (which is probably why you haven't heard of it before. They sound great though. It was on his guitars, lead vocal, and probably some of the keyboards for the mix. Again... he was bone dry when he played live.

The last time I saw him in 2003 he was using his Jose modded 800 and a guitar cable. That was it. I don't remember him using a wah but there might have been one. He just backed his volume knob down a bit during the rhythm parts and cranked it for solos. It was siiiiiiiick. I stood right up front the entire show. There were only like 75 people there, tops. Got to meet him and talk quite a bit after the show. Super cool guy and liked to talk gear.

Hmmm. Dude, you're totally right. :aww: It wasn't the wah. It was the A/B box to switch over to the JC-120's for the clean sound on a couple songs. Sorry, I take it back.

Anyway... it was for the John Sykes Bad Boy Live! record.

I wasn't trying to bust you, man! Just remembering what I saw him use. I am sure it changes a bit from year to year.

Cool experience to work on that project I bet!

Nah...I totally appreciate you jogging my memory. I don't want to give out wrong info.

Yeah, it was a massive 4-5 month education on many levels.

I worked on one of John's guitars about 5 or 6 months ago, an early 70's LP Custom with an awesome authentic aged white finish. Installed a set of Bare Knuckle Mules in that one and also put a TonePros locking bridge. Funny that BKP has a set named "Cold Sweat" for Thin Lizzy, but he got Mules instead.
