Meh, relevence is subjective IMHO. Granted, I havent been incredibley thrilled with everything that hes put out in the last 20 but that doesnt change the fact that hes an amazing player and songwriter or that he continues to inspire me and others. Im going to remian positive and hope for the best....

Hope he still has the pipes to be able to deliver vocally on this stuff... guy is amazing. Probably sounded as good as Coverdale in my opinion.

By relevant I meant interesting songwriting. I'm pretty sure the guy is talented enough to ride the auto-pilot and come up with an OK album, but that's just not interesting to me. Hopefully the guy has some type of creative surge, but chances of that happening are pretty slim. Still love to listen to that first Blue Murder album, even though I'm not a fan of the Bob Rock production/mix (hey Bob [and Mike Fraser], it's Sykes' band, maybe try mixing the guitar tracks so we can actually hear them?)

I am a big Skyes fan and am hoping for the best if he ever gets around to recording anything...but as a few others have noted He hasn't come up with much good stuff in a long time....since Blue Murder imo.

I own all his solo albums which I spent a lot of money on for the original Japanese releases. (most didn't come out elsewhere for years). Out of those cd's there are only 3 or 4 songs that I have compiled onto my own Sykes favorite disc that I even listen to.

I liked the idea that he was getting another group together with Portnoy and whoever else it was, I think he may be more inspired to kick it up a notch with that kind of setting.

I am still holding out hope that he comes up with something with some typically epic Skyes playing on it.

Here's a comment someone left from the Blabbermouth article that pretty much sums it up...

"If he had -one- song, maybe he might be able to complete it by next year.

30 songs? He'll be takin' em to the grave
"

Not much love for Sykes here, huh?
Whether he is fronting live with Lizzy or on his own discs, he grabs me by the vitals.
The production has been less than top notch as he is not on major labels, but the songs and passion are all there. His playing and vocals are top drawer - try and copy them if you need any proof of that. Keeping up with that cat is impossible.
For those that don't rate his solo work, tell me you have listened to, 'Out of my Tree'. That disc is perfect.

Anyhoo - looking forward to more from John. Been too long.

I'm biased on the subject but I sort of scratch my head when people say things about his lack of interesting songwriting. To me, each of the albums since the first Blue Murder disc has 3 or 4 great songs. On Nuclear Cowboy, I'm not a fan of the title track but I think "We Will", "Nothing Means Nothing", "Talking 'Bout Love" and "Degraded" are all great songs and pretty diverse as well as interesting.

:

We had 20th Century and Loveland for sale on the website in 2000, Nuclear Cowboy when it came out in 2003 and Bad Boy Live in early 2005. They are the exact same releases as the Japanese versions. The Blue Murder releases are out of his control. The only one he didn't bother with was Out of My Tree.

I had a few vendors I bought imports from back in the day, I probably never had the idea to look and see if the artist was selling it on their site at the time...But as far as seeing them available as cheaper imports from Germany or the UK they I don't remember seeing them until quite a long while after they were released in Japan.
