Here's the first one. A 67/68 12XXX series. Pretty ugly!

Is one of those a standout for you? Some gut shot would be great to see Ned. We like guts around here. I completely get the post no gut thing for some builders but if I owned your amps I really see no issue with with. I personally would just like to see his work. I know there are some other shots around here or there but it would be cool to see.

Gut shots coming. I really don't have any right now, so I'll take some and post. I'm more about demystifying these amps if anything. The gain mod is actually quite subtle. It's basically an input stage driven by half a 12AX7 added in front with a pot to adjust that gain level. There's a lot of hacking and unnecessary holes drilled. As far as a stand out, each amp retains it's basic sound.

Thanks Ned. Post a new thread about it. It will generate positive discussion. It's very cool of you to do so. Retaning it's own sound is part of why they must be so good. This thread has over 2,000 views. Your's will have many more and people will come in from outside of RT to see. Very cool. Regardless if Jose's work is clean or not, I am sure his amps have a magic about them gut shots will not convey. Many are aware of this, regardless if they played one or not.

Sounds like a plan. It's cool that there is still interest in these amps. Maybe to some extent this can help authenticate other amps.

Are some clips available? I'd love to hear these things.

And agree cool of you to post.

And here is a picture of my 1984 Marshall JCM 800 that I had Jose mod for me. Sorry... best picture I have. Wish I still had this one!:

Coming from likely one of the only regular posters here who rocks a solid state amp as his main rig it is not surpising you don't get too excited about amps lol.

The only thing people were actually getting "so worked up over", was a guy misrepresenting what he was selling. Surely that seems reasonable, no?

As far as the amps, the original mods are cool from a historical standpoint and this is a gear forum where we obsess over gear, so your comment seems a bit strange...

Steve or any one who can answer these.

Please educate me.

1. Did EVH probably have Jose do any of the mods he is well known for?

2. Most guys who come close to getting the EVH sound are using a stock or close to stock Plexi that is dimed and/or using a variac. Is that correct?

3. Is the Aldrich Cameron Mod, based off of a Jose mod?

4. Is John Sykes modded Marshalls a unique mod?

5. What about Joe Holmes' Marshalls? Is his different as well?

Sure!

It's hard to say if he used them, but when I was at Arrco Electronics in the mid-80s, Jose showed me several Marshalls that had the VH logo stenciled on that had similar mods to what he did for me. Maybe Ed was testing them, maybe he used them, I don't know.

That is certainly one way to get there. There are some that argue there isn't enough gain in a relatively stock Plexi, but I completely disagree...

No, it is a different mod. The Aldrich is 4 gain stages, usually without diode clipping circuits (some have them though). The more common Jose mod is 3 gain stages and a cathode follower, many times with clipping circuits. The Jose has a unique placement of the Master as well (before the tone circuit).

Don't know anything about his amps...

Joe's amps are almost identical to the one I posted above in the large pictures. He also runs an old Lexicon PCM 41 delay in the insert loop that he sets for no delay, but high input gain, which adds gain to his sound. Like hotter pickups or a boost, but in a different place in the circuit ( not on the input).

 If that answer isn't good enough then I don't know what is.

Steve,

I was on the Jose tribute FB yesterday and there are pics of Joe Holmes Heads which they are stating all Jose modded.

Didn't know JH owned Jose modded heads and has been recording with them all this time ??

Yes, I know he has at least three original Jose mods. As far as I know It is all he's recorded with. Best live tone I ever heard in my life was JH live with Ozzy using those Jose modded amps. Just incredible tone.

Have you listened to Sykes "Bad Boy Live" disc? That's one of his Jose modded 800s. Might be my favorite Marshall tone ever.
