Steve,

I was on the Jose tribute FB yesterday and there are pics of Joe Holmes Heads which they are stating all Jose modded.

Didn't know JH owned Jose modded heads and has been recording with them all this time ??
Yes, I know he has at least three original Jose mods. As far as I know It is all he's recorded with. Best live tone I ever heard in my life was JH live with Ozzy using those Jose modded amps. Just incredible tone.

Steve

I also was fortunate enough to catch JH/Ozzy on two shows.. One being the first Ozzfest here in Giants stadium. Now it explains why he sounded so damm good.

As those amps being to wear down over time, wouldn't the replacing of caps etc.. Alter that tone a bit?
My knowledge of amp circuitry goes as far as changing resistor/cap values, so I am very limited in the workings of it, just seems that would be the case.

I saw JH live as well. The tone was huge. Not my favourite live tone of all time though... Mick Mars gets my vote there. Then again, i think he might also have used some Jose sauce in a few of his amps.

I know Holmes recently said that he hadn't touched the heads in a while, as far as upkeep. The tubes died in one of them during the recording of his newest record, it made it on the song.

I've always liked Mick's tone also. The US festival comes to mind. Crispy !!

Alright... reading all of this.

Someone want to tell me why anyone should give a flying fuck whether it has a Jose mod in it or not?

Yeah Jose helped Eddie and a slew of others way back when.... so what?

None of this shit (mods etc) is a mystery anymore and it's all been done before... there's nothing special about it.

So, why not just go for the gold and claim Alexander Dumble built it?

It's a collector's item. There will be no more made, ever. If you own one and you're trying to sell it, well it's the difference between a thousand dollar amp that you have to work to unload and a ten thousand dollar payday.

You're right... Giving a flying fuck about original, unmolested mods by an innovator is stupid. Thanks for setting us all straight!

Steve or any one who can answer these.

2. Most guys who come close to getting the EVH sound are using a stock or close to stock Plexi that is dimed and/or using a variac. Is that correct?

I get this:

FYLT (Ed on L, me on R)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6fVBUL3SmFidk5Xdm04OWp3RlU/view?usp=sharing

using a JTM45RI I modded close to 60s plexi spec, variac'd @ 100V (biased @ 40mA).

My tone is 100% straight off the SM57 on the speaker cab; no DAW tweaking, no EQing, nothing.

It sounds weird with Ed's guitar in there... Can you post one up of just your guitar?

Here are mine. They were made with the Guitar Hero tracks so there is ZERO of EVH's guitar on the backing, just vox, drums and bass:

Romeo Delight (the full song)

Jamie's Cryin' (snippet)

That's so you can hear it right next to the source and pan L to R to compare; no better way to determine.

No problem. I have tons of test clips over the years....

Here's the same exact (again, not EQ'd) clip of my guitar as I just posted, but panned L and given a Sunset Studios Echo Chamber treatment:

Here's the obligatory "Unchained" (Ed on L, Me on R) I did not long after I got my variac (3 years ago):

Here's RWTD (Ed on L, Me on R) I did a few years ago:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6fVBUL3SmFiYW16ZEJoZVdOSXc/view?usp=sharing

Here's YRGM using Guitar Hero backing tracks (only my guitar on L) I did a few years ago:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6fVBUL3SmFidUVnSV9wbEVZTzQ/view?usp=sharing

A goofing around with JC (both guitars are mine):
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6fVBUL3SmFicFJkVnJiWEhRQnM/view?usp=sharing

I posted in the clips section here a long while back a vid from my YouTube channel on how I got there; apparently nobody checks out that section anymore.

This. Just like a mint 60s plexi, vintage LP/Strat, Mark 2C+ etc etc......people pay for collectors items no matter how much better or equivalent in quality/performance your newer/common items are. Just the way it is.

Nah, I get the collector's item factor... it's the dude selling the amp trying to sound all mystical about
his (supposedly) Jose'd amp that just makes me shake my head.

Steve - good stuff. Your screen name sounds familiar; ever been on Metroamp forums (for the record, they've gone way downhill now)?

The version without the Ed part is a great base tone. I think Ed's Plexi may be a little gainier than your amp and I think you gave it a bit too much reverb treatment, but it sounds very good, like an old Marshall should!

Of course, he's trying to find a sucker that'll believe him and pay that amount. EBay can be a scammers paradise even with the protections offered.

Looks like he ended it? I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, but as time went on and rather quickly at that, it became very suspicious.

After renaming the ad what, 3 times??

What a jerk off.

This shook out just the way it should have...you can't make claims like that without backing them up. Understanding the real deal isn't going to have a COA but they do tend to have previous owners that can attest to the lineage. This guy was trying to cash in on speculation.
