I got the guys in my band to do the backing track for this. Roy Nichol doing the vocals, drums and midi stuff, Don Lecompte on bass. I'm playing guitar over the backing track that we created...no other guitars are present.

This boy can sing!!!

Mark

Here's an alternate mix, tried to make the guitar a little smoother:

Awesome as always!! Some hard fingerings and chords on that one, you make it look easy but I'd have a hell of a time with them.

Hey,

I stood behind Roys kit at an outdoor gig up in CaNaDa when I first met Mark and old boy played drums, triggered samples and sang spot on Steve Perry songs an then helped carry the 4x12s off the stage when done. Doesn't get much better than that in a drummer.

Cool clip.

Mark that was incredible!!! I loved it. That is such a cool song. One of the last tunes I would expect anyone but maybe Kage to cover here on this forum. You nailed it beautifully. My only minor criticism is that I would have used less gain. Outside of that I am totally blown away. Outstanding job buddy!!!

Thanks, very whacky chords on this one for sure!

Thanks Jim, funny thing when I played the video it actually sounds like more gain than what I hear in Logic...bizarre!

My standard comment for you. Too much gain.

But......it sounded great.

Lol, thanks Ron! I still think I use less than Neal's current tone :)

Neal does use a LOT of gain. I guess it's just more of a vintage high gain than your tone.

Nice!!~! Now I have a couple of guys on my "Just in case I can't make it" list, who I can call.

Love the videos where you get your band to do the backing track. I'd love to see you guys live.

Crazy to think of the talent that is behind the kit sometimes. Does your drummer play guitar too? If so, he could be the next Dave Grohl :D

Very Cool! My Favorite Journey tune!

Your drummers voice is awesome! I wish all drummers were like Yours & Theirs!

Old school version aint so bad either: ;)

Mark, your playing just gets better and better.

I'm really interested to know how you got to this point....i.e. what is your practice regimen...what do you practice and for how long? every day of the week? And how long does it take you to get something like the Hold The Line solo down?

I play everyday because I give lessons. Lately I have cut back some of my students and actually play for myself, I'm even taking lessons from one of my instructors. So I normally get at least an hour a day and more on the weekends usually, plus the time I'm am actually teaching. Most of the time I'm teaching a Taylor Swift song to young girls or AC/DC to 14 year old lads..lol.

For tougher solos it normally takes me a couple of hours to pick out the notes and rehearse with Transcribe. Sometimes I'll go to YT to find ideas for the solo if I get to a part I'm confused with. I suck at tabs. Lately I rehearse the solo for a day or two before I do the video. Previously I would try and get it out too quick and I would struggle with it. Most of the solos I'm doing in these vids I didn't previously know. Stuff I really loved but never played in a band situation or just did my own thing, but most I just new a riff or two in the song. I'm horrible at remembering things. I will forget Hold The Line in a week or two if I don't play it everyday.

Nice kid not too bright.

That was awesome and thanks for sharing!!
The screwed up thing is that I am now the backup guitar player to a journey tribute band and I have to learn that song and by posting that video, I can't tell you how much easier you have made it for me to learn it!
KILER, Killer Job! On another note, I am exactly like you in that I cannot for the life of me remember stuff after I've learned it. If I don't use it I lose it. It's a major thorn in my side!!

All the best!
