You are correct, that was Richie Faulkner. He played in Steve Harris' Daughters band with my friend Randy.

I thought they sounded good, new guitarist rocked!
It was a nice thank you to James "give metal a chance" Durbin who played Priest and other rockin tunes earlier in the year against the judges advice.
The fact that Scotty won weakens the show even more and illustrates it is not really a singing competition but a popularity contest with young teen girls.
The best singer has not won in years and the winners are getting worse.
I really hoped Durbin would win

Here in Phoenix back in the '80s there was a shitty little club called The Mason Jar - the owner was a pervert nutter named Franco - and everyone played there, even some good touring acts like Scatterbrain, Steve Vai, Jake E Lee (twice) etc etc etc. George Lynch put together a "secret" band called "Gay Black Nazi Bikers for Christ" between Dokken and Lynch Mob and of course they rocked the somewhat unstable stage. Imagine the power and energy of big touring musicians squeezed into a 300 person capacity bar. Many outstanding performances were seen there, and many "seventy-five cents kamikazes" imbibed. Oh, and the local girls were perfectly slutty too, all big hair and razor-cut jeans. Yeah.

But I digress.

One Saturday night a well-known metal band named Surgical Steel (headed by local rock impresario Jim Keeler) took the stage for the usual mix of originals and covers. After the break the crowd started taking notice of a certain bald guy hanging out on stage, huddling with the band. SS was well-known as a JP cover band, and as the crowd figured it out, the buzz level rose commensurately. It turned out that a healthy, off-tour Rob Halford was on stage to guest sing for not one or two songs but for a 90 minute set. The band ripped through all the great JP tunes and Rob was in perfect form, his rested voice hitting all the notes with a leering authority and inimitable style. Living after midnight, indeed. For me, it was better than JP in any stadium; it was truly a night to remember.

I will not be YouTubing JP's appearance on Idol, where it will inevitably appear. I want nothing to sully my memory of a Rock God performing at the height of his power.

Shoulda got Adam Lambert doing a crotch-grabbin make-out session, guess that where we're heading.

KK saw it coming, Metal is now owned by Simon Cowell.

Oh how the mighty have fallen...
tis a sad day to see the likes of Priest reduced to a clown show
:D

Yeah they've fallen so far they have resorted to appearing on the biggest show on television.

You got it bro! Cracks me up that people here dog bands for taking a gig that they would be bragging about on here. I can just see the title...."I'm playing on american Idol tonight". The goal for them is to have as many people as possible to see them and promote their music. I'd take the gig and I'm sure most others here would to.

That's it. Do you think the guys playing Dream On with Steven Tyler felt a little bit off by doing that tune when the full Aerosmith band should have been doing it? Maybe. Would I have taking that gig? In a heartbeat. I love ya Joe, but if I had that kind of opportunity, I'm there in your shoes. If anyone says they'd do differently, they're either a fool or they're lying. You're in the music business. Morals and integrity do not apply here.

Very short lived, and very real. Only played out once or twice, as I recall, but for some reason I have a few memory gaps of that era . . .

Cool, I never caught his name. We saw them on that Maiden tour they opened up. Not too many play a white SG Custom anymore. :)

FWIW I thought they did a good job on there and it was cool to see them on there. They got paid for it, and played to a crowd they wouldn't normally get to and they were on a highly rated tv show. Cooler to see that then some of the other stuff on there.

they weren't live last night...it was a tape.
The drums were padded...the cymbals were fake ,and the engls weren't loaded.
Rob was however singing.

I bet that they got PAID for that show quite well....

No doubt they did. I did not see it, but thought it was kinda sad. I would prefer to remember them on stage on the "Screaming For Vengance" tour in their prime.
Some seem to hold american idol in high esteem here
To each his own :aww:

The SOP is to bag on it relentlessly until your heroes go buns up and appear on the show. THEN it's cool.

As for appearing on Top of the Pops or anything else, there's a difference between showing up to say "Here's our new music, this is us and this is our sound" and pimping yourself out as a backing track for a god damn karaoke contest.

I would have to agree with that
