I think the backstory is the heavier security presence was mistakenly sent to the wrong court room. I didn't read that story but I saw it as a headline/explanation for how he was able to get at the judge relatively easy. He's going away for a long time now....

Wouldn't surprise me if she had prosecuted a bunch of judges' chomo buddies or relatives and so they set her up with this fella knowing what the result might be. Kinda like cops who leave the whistleblower for dead when he calls shots fired on the radio. Finish your coffee and respond to the emergency. We just happened to send the special security team to the wrong court room leaving a high risk offender lightly guarded in front of our least favorite co-worker.

I don't like the police and I don't like judges. I don't like authority at all. I guess that makes me a perfect Australian - goes with our history. I kind of liked the predator becoming the prey - that's one of my favourite things. That said, in this instance it seems they were actually doing their job for a change instead of picking low hanging fruit which is why I normally don't like them. Eg. The police here are great at issuing traffic violations but are crap when it comes to actually doing something that's a real issue when you call them. Sounds like the guy that was getting sentenced here actually did need some jail time this time around.
