Just Checked Out This Marshall JVM Demo And...

Thats awesome dude, it's easy to get sucked up into the high dollar amp world and if someones got the money, more power to 'em.. a lot of the high dollar amps do sound terrific. as a matter of fact i'd venture as far as, most amps sound great as long as the person using them knows what they're doing!

but with something like the JVM or even the 900, an experienced user can surely make them sound terrific! sounds like you've got a nice little collection going.

There are some bargain amps out there that fly under the radar, most can sound good, maybe not as good as the more popular models, but still good.

for sure!

one of the weirder amps i've had my eye on is the Krank Rev 1...on its own it doesn't sound too good but in a mix it adds this really incredible chunkiness that i love. they go for like sub $1k all day!
 
I have no experience with exotic high dollar boutique amps. I wonder whether they are that much better than your tried and true standards (Marshall, Mesa, Fender, etc.).

my closest to a boutique amp is my Bogner Helios Eclipse. It sounds very good, very articulate and dimensional. IIRC, it's supposed to be a modded Marshall 800 which I don't have for comparison. It came down to the Bogner vs Splawn Quickrod; and I went with the Bogner. I think my other Marshalls could get close enough. for now I'm set with my Marshall, Mesa, Engl and Fender amps.

In general it works for a faux plexi tone.

Guys - on the Master Volume and pushing the power section.

Per Santiago, cranking the Master volume will not push the power section any harder. He actually recommends pushing the channel volumes higher as opposed to the Masters.

In my opinion as a JVM 410H fanboy, Marshall needs to update the amp.

1. get rid of the serial/parallel loop and add a basic serial loop ala HJS.
2. Dump the reverb, nobody uses it and make the Noise Gate standard ala HJS.
3. Revoice the Crunch channel to be even more JCM 800, it's a little boomy by itself IMO.
4. Line out / IR. Do something here, I know Marshall is planning to go that route in some way, the JVM needs to be updated with that tech.
5. Possible optional upgrade, add a choke. IMO it doesn't make a difference, my modded JVM had a choke and I just didn't notice a difference but for some players, that seems to be a hangup.

Basically what Satriani did was update things like the loop, the gates etc... which I think Marshall needs to incorporate. The problem with me and the HJS is they tamed the amp down by revoicing certain channels and dialing the gain back, it's a dull amp IMO. I liked the logical updates but hated the revoicing of the HJS.

Depends on what you mean by "better". My two main amps (Diezel & Koch) are what most would consider "high dolar boutiques" and I really enjoy them. I find the difference in the room is really about depth, feel and the overall richness and complexity of the high-gain tones. These differences are most noticeable when I'm alone sitting in front of the amps. That said, I will always want to have access to those more straightforward Marshall, Mesa and 5150 tones. If I were to be back in a band and not just playing at home...I'd reach for a Peavey 5150 II immediately That was my main stage amp and always delivered in the mix regardless of the venue.

Yep better is completely subjective to each player. As you I've owned a ton of boutique stuff through the years but the two amps that lasted the longest were my OG 5150 and my JVM not only for live use but everything else.

Honestly, if there ever was a flagship amp that was OVERDUE for an update...It would definitely be the JVM.

I don’t know if they still use them but I found the Megadeth tone they got with them an album or two ago was just very sterile sounding. I mean, sure, it’s tight, it’s effortless palm mute city but just lacked any kind of richness behind it. I get the same feeling from the JMP-1 pre. Just a coldness with no juice to the tone.

I kinda like that tone my self . But not fir me
