Been tracing my roots back. Got as far as 1850 for free membership. I need to cough up the $49 to go further back and get records

I have my grandfathers exact name who i never knew. He passed 7 yrs before i was hatched

I always wondered how he got his name.
No one else in the family has my name.

Today i learned his name came from his grandmother.

They just changed the last letter from feminine to masculine

So i have my great great grandmothers name originally from Campobosso molise Italy born 1850. 114 yrs before my sorry ass.
She died 1909. The year my grandfather was born

So makes sense as a tribute

Im not sure if she ever made it to the US.
My great grandmother did.

I vaguely remember her. She died at 93 when i was 6 yrs old

Digging up the past is a bit fun but also a bit spooky. You never know what will be revealed.

Italians eh...not too long ago you wouldn't have been welcome in this crowd or even considered white in the USA. Keep that in mind.

If by not too long you mean about 125 years, you are correct. Even then they were still considered better than the Irish.

And what does being "Considered white" have to do with anything ?

Ask your brethren here...

OP, that's really cool! Family history is definitely interesting to learn. There's always twists and unexpected turns.

WTF is wrong with you? Do you have to shit up every thread with your nonsense?
Why do non Americans think they know so much about the US? You watch too many movies.

Italian immigrants in America faced significant discrimination, anti-Italian sentiment, violence (including lynchings), and economic exploitation, leading them to form tight-knit ethnic enclaves, endure poor working/living conditions, and face pressure to assimilate by changing names and suppressing culture, with even harsher measures like curfews and internment imposed during WWII, despite their eventual significant cultural contributions and service.

Keep it in mind when you consider which communities are on the receiving end today...it could easily be you or your ancestors. Cheers.
