Just got a slo (need pick up advise)

You should try the EMG 81/85 pups. Awesome in the Les Paul.

I'm gonna disagree with you. Putting EMGs in a LP makes it sound like any other solid body guitar with active pickups. Low/medium PAF pups are the way to go imho. You can hear the characteristics inherit in the guitar with passives. EMGs totally rob them of their natural tone.

I have my Gibson Les Paul, a PRS Custom24, two Hamer Californian USA Elites, A Jackson Kelly, an Ibanez 7-string and two Warmoth Mahogany body/maple neck guitars with EMG 81/85 or 81/SA pups and they all sound different (except the Hamers, they are two identical guitars and both of them sound the same). I hear the difference in the woods used and how they are equipped/built (i.e. Floyd, no Floyd, solid body, chambered body, etc). That tells me that the EMG's transfer through the characteristics of the guitars.

EMG's are real pick-ups (i.e. windings, magnets, bobbins, etc). They just use a pre-amp to bring up the volume and add a little compression to the notes. They are not synthesizers or samplers LOL.

Just call wade at motorcity pickups..he is one of the nicest guys you will meet.he can wind you anything you want.he has a great ear for tone....

I'm going to agree/disagree with both of you. I think EMG's sound pretty good in Les Pauls, but the problem with EMG's is that they sound like most other guitars with EMG's. The Les Paul sound still comes out a bit with EMG's, but I don't think anyone really buys EMG's to get great tone. You buy them for the sound EMG's are known for. If you want great tone, an active pickup is not the route to take in my opinion.

By the way, Gibson Burstbuckers are hard to beat. They're great pickups.

I think my settings are pretty common for a slo pre-amp 5 bass 8 mids 4 treble 4 and presence 4. I do not use the depth mod but have the WH mod. As I said though It sounds great now mabey It was that the pick ups being high were causing it to distort a little more thus becoming less clear.

On my SLO, I'm running pre-amp gain at 4-5, Bass at 4, Mids dimed, and treble and presence about 5.

I have a Bogner v30 cab.

I'd try turning down your bass. The Bogner cabs are dark out of the box.

I have to try those settings but really mids dimed? I already consider the slo mid heavy. I do indeed find the the bogner cab darker but it still retains a punch no cabinet I had had. It also has a chewy aspect which I love.

Will he actually do this for anyone who asks? I've heard a few people talk about getting some custom wound pickups from Motor City, but I wasn't sure if he'd do it for anyone who calls him.

yea he sure will! his policy is to listen to what gear you have and what you're looking to get out of the pickup. he then "adjusts' the pickups hes winding for you. If you're not happy with what you got send em back and either start over with a new model or rewind what you already have.

There is no greater customer service when it comes to a pickup and Wade is a nice guy as well!

My custom should be in this week.
