I would love to have the Original 5153 but with the Resonance Controls from the back of the stealth.

It's actually easy to do (or for any tech). There are 3 specific resistors on the board - remove them and replace with 1meg pots (paraphrased instructions)

Yeah, that's it. Replace the 3 resistors with pots. As long as you're OK with drilling 3 holes in the back of your amp, you're good to go.
I've owned both the original 5153 100 watt and the 6L6 Stealth. Liked the original better.
I had been thinking maybe I would snag another original 5153 and drill 3 holes on the back :lol: :LOL: :lol: :LOL: :lol: :LOL:
I think now I'll wait a bit and check this new one out first.
I'm looking forward to hearing the OP's thoughts on the differences between the EL34 version & the original 5153.

I can tell you the el34 is more compressed, has an actual fender clean channel which is awesome in my opinion and the volume is equal to the other channels which is an added plus. Also the bottom end on the el34 is WAY more noticeable. I personally prefer the blue channel on the el34 version but I am an el34 guy at heart. I think the red channel could sway either way on these amps. I dig the el34 better and it is definitely more compressed than the original version

I'll post a clip here shortly but you guys be easy on me. I am recovering from being in the hospital with pneumonia for a week among recovering from other things...

Was thinking on my way back from dinner, might have this amp modded to original specs, except the clean, witch is just insane. And give the blue just a tad more gain and the red well i love the original so i woul keep it the way it is on the 100. I would have the el34 growl and have the resonance controls and the bias adjust.

Just a thought here. I will give it a go tomorrow, if time permits as i have stuff to do.

Good idea?

Bad idea?

My amp, my decision?

Do what the hell you want ass........h....o...l..e ?

Lol

But seriously thinking about it. IF, i don't find the tone i love in it.

Curious...and I've never even played an EVH...but for you guys that think either the blue or red channels have too much gain, have you tried a 12AT7 in the relevant spots? On a side note, I've always thought (at least from the clips I hear online) that those EVHs sound very SLOish.

They don't sound like an SLO to me, more Marshall on the blue and Mesa on the red. Had 2 50w EVH and 2SLOs.

I thought the 6L6 Stealth had a stupid amount of gain and compression. The first gain stage that feeds both blue and red channels on the 100S has a 220k plate load resistor so I tried dropping that to 100k, and I also tried a 12au7 and a 5751 in a few spots. Dropping the plate resistor to 100k helped quite a bit to clean up both blue and red channels. They added a .0047uf bright cap to the blue gain pot on the 100S, and the resistor change allowed me to get the gain pot up to 12 - 1 o' clock, which took some of the ice-pick out, but kept the gain manageable. Kinda like the original blue channel, which I really liked.
The 12au7 robbed too much tone anywhere I tried it, but the 5751 was good in V4, which is the second gain stage for the red channel.
I thought the amp actually sounded pretty good at that point, but then I got on the Wizard train, and it never got played, so it went out the door.
I do miss the blue channel though...

Yeah, the Blue channel sounds "hot rodded Marshall" to me too.

I hear more low mids in the EVH than a Marshall. Anyway though, I think they sound great. :rock:

Definitely cool amps for the price, like to try a Stealth version..but I went all out and have a Wizard MTL coming.

I have the Stealth and am kind of jonesing to go back to the plain jane 100w non-Stealth.

Got to try it out for 10 minutes.....

Clean is fabulous, like really awesome.

Blue, hmmm, can now be used as a heavy rythm channel with more compression than the old blue. I like the old blue better, after 10 minutes that is, so keep than in mind, i did not fiddle long with the settings. Will do later.

Red, whoaa, gain you say, if you never tried this amp, you don't know what a lot of gain means!!!! Compression? Through the roof. 9-10 o clock max on the gain knob. With the volume on zero on my guitar and i can hear the compression the channel generates, you can hear a low mid shhhhhhh. This is not a bad thing for somebody that like a compressed tone.

This all compared to the original 100, from my experience playing it all these years, did not do an A/B yet.

At first try, it will not replace the 100, not yet. We will see after a played with the settings more.

Stay tuned, gotta leave for dinner.

How does it compare to a Bogner Ecstasy?

Got to play it a little bit again last night, played with the resonance knobs and it made a big difference, for the better. Compression was reduced and the bottom end tightened, less boomy.

Will try a video in the room later.

Well i had an Ecstacy a long time ago. By what i remember, it is quite similar, but the Bogner was more chewy, loooser bottom end, more organic. More tonal options obviously with the tonal switches.

The cleans on the EVH is just awesome. I will get it to sound the way i like with some tweaking and my MXR EQ.

OK, did a quick clip of the red channel. Haven`t recorded a video in years.

Gain=noon
LOW=11
MIDS=1
HIGHS=11
PRESENCE=NOON
RESONANCE=9
VOLUME=SMIDGE OVER 9

Zoom Q3, EVH Wolfie Drop C, Suhr Aldrich pup.

Has some riffs, open chords and chugs at the end. Fixation on the darkness by Killswitch. Couple fucks here and there, must be the red light stressing me...LOL

Will do more.

Sounds good man. I know you didn't gel with the original Stealth. How's the comparison?
From the clips it seems more edgy.
Like what I hear. Have to check one out for sure.

Yup, more edgy is the right term here, less bloom on the bottom end, more EDGY mids, highs are a little more focused. Cleans, god damn, the cleans are outrageous, i love them.

But the main difference are the mids for sure, more throaty and to the point. Bottom end gets a little less broad, more narrow, not as big and fat.

I was wondering one thing, don't know if this is normal. The blue and red channels, to they share gain stage? While i am on the red channel, if i turn the gain knob on the BLUE channel, the hiss level increases and if playing, the saturation augments also???? So if i set my gain on blue a certain way, my red channel gets affected??? This sucks.

Here is a little vid i shot:

Something is being shared.
You described the original stealth exact. Loved it. But it was 'too fat' as you mention.
Like the more 'cutty ' edge tone. Was what I wanted out the original stealth.
But man. I never even tried or heard an original EVH 5153 100.
That's killin me too!! :doh:
