I worked with a bass player years ago that would use a horse mat. They can be found pretty cheap. He used it every place. He said it made his entire rig perform better on a lot of stages. Some stages vibrate a lot and this can have a negative effect on the sound. It might work for this problem ....here is just one example ....

This is it - boom. Done. Perfect and cheap.

Was only a matter of time before this was suggested. My only concern is that I didn't recommend it first :hys:

Hey Stephen, do you work with AIF files and the like? I'm putting together a little virtual musical triumvirate in the next couple weeks - PM me if you're interested.

That does seem promising.

I live in an apartment as well

I haven't had any formal complaints but my upstairs neighbors have pounded on the floor a few times. I don't play after 9 and I don't get anywhere near the level I'd like to play at. The parking garage is the only thing under me so, at least I don't have to worry about that. I've already decided, if someone complains, yeah, I'll turn it down a little bit but seriously, they can deal with it. I don't ever play between 9pm-10am that seems more than reasonable to me.

I would think milk crates like skoora mentioned with the horse pad under and on top of the creates and moderating the amount of bass being used could go a long way. I know for a fact they very much improve getting a more consistent sound from stage to stage .... environment to environment. From practice his wife said it made a pretty good improvement for stopping the vibration from his monster rig ..... Ampeg 2x15,(2)8x10 Mesa 2x15 all stacked on their side. Powered Mesa 400 and 400+ and (2)SVT2's...

Lay your cab face down on the floor above her and then turn it up a bit so you can hear it. That should help...

When I lived in apartements, I kept my amp on an amp stand. It worked fine, I never got any complaints about noise.

She seems like a real bitch. I can hear her through the floor yelling 24/7 and I even hear her outside. Seems like i'm in a bit of a position unless I get foam padding. Better get on that soon :P.

Time for a new neighbor... I know of a few fellows that can take care of that for ya ;)

Sorry but you live in an apartment. Not a house, and not a rehearsal studio. You can practice unplugged or with headphones at any hour if you need to. Anything above typical tv volumes is unreasonable when you live in an apartment. If you want to play loud, go to a rehearsal studio or use it on stage at a gig for what they're designed for. I live in an apartment too and the last thing I want to hear is some guitarist getting his "tone." The reality is that no one cares that you play guitar, and nor should they have to, they're paying rent and are entitled to not have to listen to you playing guitar when they're in their own home. Same with other people cranking stereos/tvs/loud parties etc.

It's got casters on it. Like literally wasn't feeling any bass or rumble siting next to it. :loco:

Even my girlfriend agreed I was barely playing loud.

Have hot and heavy sex with said girlfriend, make loud noises. Previously mentioned neighbors will then be grateful for guitar playing instead. :D

Most places have laws that cover this stuff ..... if someone does not like the laws in that area they can move. You would be amazed at how loud you have the legal right to be. It is usually measured in dB's at a certain distance from your property. The volume is usually as loud as loud power-tools or chainsaw at certain times of day. The laws are no different for apartments than they are for houses.

If you allow people to infringe upon your rights that is your problem .... know your rights and the local law ..... otherwise you can just allow others to tell you what and what not you can do if you wish.

Most police are not familiar with the law so never allow them to tell you what the law is. Many tend to just make up stuff is my experience. In most cases it is not to your advantage to speak with them at all. If they come to my door I ignore it always. They can break the door down if they have reason ....

When I was still in college at OSU, I owned a home near the campus. I was approximately 5 feet away from my next door neighbor on one side. They called the police during practice one afternoon. I explained to the police that the neighbors had NEVER once complained to me about a problem. In fact, I had been fairly considerate about when we practiced and the amount of time in which we practiced (never past 9:00 and never more than few hours a couple days a week). The cops were super cool when I explained that and in fact told me that the band sounded good and we were not all that loud. That neighbor and I never did get along after that.

Anyway, I would try to be nice but if they can't be reasonable then it becomes their problem, not yours.

But at what point do city ordnance laws overtake your contract, which typically states that you won't make "unreasonable noise" (whatever that is quantified as) that disturbs the neighbors?

The police here told me they need three complaints from different residents. If they only get two calls they do nothing for noise. They do not even send anyone out to see what is going on. But this area has a lot of real problems. Noise complaints are not going to be high on the list even after that. I have lived in a lot of states ..... the laws are different in all of them. That is why I pointed out you need to know what the law is where you live. My experience with the police is if you do not answer the door they usually leave in a few minutes. That has been true in every state I have lived in. The places that the law set up for dB's certain distance from the property are the places you can get away with the most usually.

At all times you have the right to know who your accuser is. In almost all case the person that calls in the complaint makes more noise and / or breaks the same law.

It has been my experience if you talk with your neighbors before you play loud music and ask them to tell you first if they have a problem with it ...they have a very different interpretation .... and are much less likely to complain or even care.

I've had a problem with a woman here who refuses to identify herself and just calls the front office of the apartment. I've tried to be as conciliatory as possible with the manager, who sympathizes with me but claims her hands are tied and that I'm not to play at anything "unreasonable". It's a really shitty thing to do to a neighbor. I feel like I can't confront my accuser in this situation. So far the police haven't been called, but that's only because I play during the daytime and she doesn't have to call the police- she just calls the manager, who then calls me.
