Just gutted. Cranking it up for Ed.

I've just been super bummed all week. Tuesday felt like getting punched in the stomach, and I had a lump in my throat all day. Diver Down was the second cassette tape I ever owned, and I totally wore it out within the first 6 months. The first concert I ever saw as a kid was Van Halen. For the past 20 years I've been able to carve out a living working in/managing music stores, teaching in music schools and lesson studios, and working as a guitar repair guy. None of that would've been possible without Ed. The Frankenstein guitar was what inspired me to rip apart my old Memphis Strat when I was 12 and figure out how to put it back together. Just absolutely gutted. Today I thought I'd turn everything up way too loud in his honor and hack my way through one of my favorite tunes.

Badass!!! Great work brother! Yeah, I've been gutted too. I recorded a bunch of EVH riffs for my friends just jamming on a few of his old tunes. I can't remember the last time I just felt the loss of someone in the music industry like this. It is a combination of growing up with his music, learning guitar because of him, knowing how much he loved the guitar, etc. It is all encompassing.

I just got my EVH "Frankenstein" mini guitar in the mail the other day. Put a smile on my face for sure. I decided I'm going to get the actual EVH "Frankenstein" guitar and told the guitar store to tell me when they have them in stock again. I want to have one to play and to have as a wonderful memory of why I picked up a guitar in the first place.

I read somewhere that VH's "1984" album is in the charts again with everyone playing so much of their music. I just love it.
 
Thanks guys. It's just been a really weird week. He was a massive part of so many people's lives. He wasn't just a guitar player's guitar player, he wrote songs that were the soundtracks to people's lives. It's been amazing seeing the outpouring from people ages 10-75. Like I mentioned in the first post, I work for a music school and we've been doing everything online due to the health crisis. Everyone I've spoken to all week has just been heartbroken. There was a disturbance in the force on Tuesday, and we all felt it.

We all feel that way. THE legend is gone. Biggest bummer. I am counting my blessings I got to see him in different VH eras. Only saw them with Roth as a kid once and I couldn’t fully appreciate the masterful genius that was in front of me. I saw him play at the Oakland coliseum one time and Edward was on fire, cutting it so strict that it was breathtaking. I stood there, shocked and elated at what I was witnessing. He opened up the workshop and kept it open the entire night, effortlessly playing, with that relaxed smile. Man, we are all devastated. Nice playing. It’s awesome you got to witness him play.
 
The only silver lining in all of this, is that Ed may have just changed the future of rock'n'roll yet again. It was such a catastrophic loss, that young kids everywhere took notice. I taught more Van Halen this past week than I have all year. Kids are hearing Eruption for the first time and it's completely blowing their mind. May he inspire a whole new generation of rippin' players and songwriters.

My dad is a guitar player and his middle name is Edward, and his old friends and our family calls him Eddie. He hates it.

I've been tearing apart my 25.5" maple neck/body ibanez for years searching for tone.

It's got EVH's fave knobs, been through 10 pickups, circuits, you name it, and don't get me started on tubes, amps and cabs!

Today, I did two last things: went from 11's to 10's because Ed played 9's (I drop tune) to get less bass, gain and a looser feel/more relaxed treble.

Put fillister screws in place of the hexes in my 25 year old SD Screamin' Demon...

...and there it was. My tone. After watching Pete Thorn/Dave/Steve/Jenn today, and geekin out on EVH all weekend, the tone finally arrived.

Never stop chasing your sound, never give up. When it comes, think of Ed and thank God we had him!
