Well I broke down and decided to give Egnater another chance after my TM experience...

I bought a new Rebel 30 head from GC...

I went down there to buy a new amp and I tried them all out... Marshall, Boogie,Fender, Bogner etc...

I then tried out the Renegade 65... I didn't quite figure out why both channels have a gain knob!!!

I tried to increase the volume but , it wouldn't go up without increasing the gain.. I didn't like the way it started to distort the clean sound I was looking for...

Was about to give up and go home when, one of the sales mangers starting playing the rebel 30 combo.... The guy started off a little slow but, then after a few minutes he started to get into a nice groove...

It caught my attention so I hung around for a while and started asking questions... He showed me how everything worked and I really like the fact that the Rebel has a clean channel with no gain knob...

Now before anyone starts blasting me.. I have very little knowledge of amps in general.. I like to plug in my guitar and press one button for clean and another for distortion...

I couldn't get the renegade to put out a really clean sound with having to turn the gain knob up just to hear the amp.. Was I doing something wrong? Probably....

Anyway, I sat and listened to him play for about 20 minutes and then I decided to pick one up and take it home.. (Yes, I did pay for it.)

I don't have an egnater cabinet to plug it into yet..... I AM LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS>>>>>>

I do have a Marshall JCM800 4x12 cabinet at home... Can I plug it directly into it? Just to try it out before I go and buy an egnater cabinet....

I will be using the amp for live shows... Usually in a small venue... bars, VFW's etc.. you get the point...

What cabinet should I buy? 1x12, 2x12 or the 4x12? I have no idea how much this head can handle.......

Suggestions appreciated....

Just hooked up the head to my Marshall JCM800 4x12 cabinet...

Awesome power...

I tried it with my Stratocaster and didn't really dig the tone.. Then I plugged in my Les Paul.. Outstanding...

I think I need to tweak the Strat alittle...

I am wondering if it sound even better through an Egnater cabinet?

Chim in guys... Still looking for some advice on which cabinet to get...

Cool head!

I would just use whatever cab you think sounds best. Possibly take it and audition different cabs. I can power a 4x12 no problem. Its a loud head

I don't have the Rebel 30, but I do find that the Tourmaster is sensitive to my different guitars. I have to EQ it differently for the Strat or for the humbuckers. Rebel 30 is probably like that too. Properly set, I bet it really shimmers with a Strat!

I have the Rebel 30 Combo. It comes with a Celestion Elite 80. I think it sounds pretty good. If it were me I'd probably go with 2 (1x12's) for your head and maybe swap the speaker in one of them to a vintage 30? That would be really portable for you to take around since the head and those 1x12s are really light. I think it would be excellent for those smaller venues you mentioned and you wouldn't have that big 4x12 to haul around.

Also, I have an 80s fender squier strat and I think I can get a nice single coil sound with the rebel. Just tweak it a bit... maybe if I remember I can write down my EQ settings...

Thanks Rob...

You got me thinking about the (2) cabinets...

I wonder how it would sound if I bought a 2x12 cabinet and switched out one of the speakers for a Vintage 30... Or I could put in another speaker input and plug it in to the other jack on the back of the amp....

Send me those Eq settings if you get a chance... I have a few strats so I may try a different one tonight...

I've said it how many times..... the Rebel 30 clean channel is where the amp shines.
It's simply an incredible sounding clean channel that takes pedals extremely well.
It will give you enough headroom for gigs.
I bought a couple Celestion Vintage 30's in 1x12 cabs and tried them out in my combo.
My personal opinion is the V30 eliminates the low mid spike that I get from the elite 80.
I much prefer the sound and efficiency of the V30. Mind you these were 10 years old and already way broke in.....
I didnt even care for the mix and match of one V30 and one elite 80.
I'm going with 2 V30's for my Rebel stack. If you like a semi scooped sound, I recommend checking out the V30's.

I agree. Sat in on a blues gig the other day. It was a travel light kind of gig. Didn't want to work too hard hauling my heavy @ss MOD50. Hey it was a Sunday! Loaded up the Rebel 30 and 1X12 cab with Eminence GB12, a little delay in the loop, Xotic BB, and a Rock Box Boiling point. Ran a Wampler Nirvana chorus on the end for faux leslie, wobble box sounds and it was awesome. Never touched the footswitch for gain once. Great little amp. I will be unloading it soon. I'll be going for the Tweaker 40 watt 2 channel, for this very reason. The way I have it working the second channel would be low gain like the first just a hair more gain and volume for more options.

Congrats regulator1 on your purchase of a Rebel 30! While I haven't had the opportunity to play a Rebel 30, I have heard great things about how it sounds on this forum and I am sure it is a solid choice.

Regarding your original post asking the question, "Why is a dedicated gain knob offered on channel 1 of the Renegade?" My response to this question is that most amp manufacturer's offer a dedicated gain knob for each channel of their amps (on some models they offer) for increased flexibility of tones that can be achieved in each channel.

Clearly you are new to electric guitar amplifiers based on your original post and that is fine.....all of us were newbies as well when we started playing guitar and experimented with different amps. The point that I am trying to make is that channel 1 of the Renegade is capable of some of the lushest clean tones that I have heard......and I have played through many an amp from many different amp manufacturers. That being said, I primarily play single coil strat type guitars that have a humbucker in the bridge position (HSS). I normally have my pickup selected to one of the single coil positions or shared position with the humbucker while achieving the lush clean tones obtainable from the Renegade.

Anyhow.....I am sure that you will be able to obtain sounds out of your Rebel 30 as well. Your original post just caught my eye because Channel 1 of the Renegade offers some of the best clean tones I have ever achieved in any amp!

Enjoy your Rebel 30! :)

I wonder how many others will be trying to unload an R30 or Renegade to grab a Tweaker 40 /80...
I have the same plan. :)
I would love keep both, but have no reason what so ever for 2 amps.

Hey,

Here are some settings to try. I'm using an HSS strat just using the neck single coil. I'm not using a lot of volume on both channels since I'm playing at home.

For clean I keep tight and bright off and put the treble at 2' o clock and the bass at 10' o clock. I think it sounds really nice

For the Overdrive I put treble at 3'oclock Middle and Bass at 10' o clock, Gain at 1 o clock and keep tight and bright off.

I would like to get a 1x12 cabinet next year to go with my combo to make a mini stack. :-) I drive a Jeep wrangler and they really don't have any cargo room but I think I could still fit it. :-)

Tried the settings... Sounds great..

I just picked up the 2x12 cabinet yesterday.. So far so good..

I may pick up a 1x12 used off of Ebay to install a vintage 30 just to have a different option...
