Just tried some Electronic drums and....

I've been able to test drive a number of different model kits from both Yamaha and Roland and I gotsta say, I was pretty impressed with what I heard and how it felt. I'm not a drummer - as in, not my main instrument of choice - but I was a drummer, in the sense I am more natural a drummer than guitarist. Needless to say, this has always allowed me to step behind a kit and give'er in any session space, even better if the drums are set up for lefties like me :D

But ya, the Rolands were 'impressive'. That what I remember after playing them several times over.

listen to this. This is what I hear. When hitting repeated notes on these guys, they seem to trigger the same sound, giving that machine gun sound. I hear this on all of the Edrums I have played thus far. Some of them feel great to play, but as far as emulating how a real drum reacts to multiple hits and rolls, its not quite there yet imo

Visiting the rolands Vdrum site, there are many people who also feel the That roland needs to improve the sound. Feel and triggers work just fine.

here is a side by side of Addictive drums and Oceanway. The first examples has vocals in the AD, but not the oceanway, but try to listen to just the drums. The second example is a heavier attempt. in both examples, addictive drums is first half, and oceanway is second half in each clip.

Bottom line for me, and for the publisher I was creating this for, chose the oceanway drums. They are more clear, sound fuller and bigger and less grainy then the Addictive samples.

(Edit, for copyright reason, I took down my other examples)

Here is a side by side comparison of the same midi file. First with a Preset from Addictive drums, then a preset from Oceanway.

While I know I can tweak Addictive drums (and oceanway) I just figured grabbing a preset would be easiest. What I find consistent is that Addictive drums always sounds a bit more gritty, slightly grainy and less clear compared to oceanway. Oceanway sounds fuller and more clear 9/10 times. Addictive drums is still great, but I think when it comes for me trying to pass off real acoutics, I am going to have to use oceanway from now on. Like I said I was working with a publisher who wasn't happy with my drum sound, untill I upgraded.
Wow, the OW does sound much better. Good to know. The AD sounds pretty flat compaired to what I'm used to hearing from them  not sure why it would be different
Anyway, thanks, got a link for oceanway??

I just pulled up one of the Clean presets from AD, likewise I just pulled up a preset from Oceanway. Sure you can tweak AD more and what not. I have used AD for a bit and like it lots. Not until I was told my drum sound wasn't passing did I have to upgrade to something else. The oceanway tracks made it through the critisism. I didn't really pay much attention to what now I think of AD, which is good, but it sounds a bit grainy and muffled in comparison. Comes across almost grittier in every preset, or tweaking I have tried to do with AD. I am sure it fits the bill great sometimes, but Oceanway will be my first go to.

Can you post something you have done with AD? or if you want, send me your audio file of the drums, and the midi file of what triggered them, and I can see how OWD compares specifically to YOUR track.

I'm in the same situation, I have Superior Drummer & not really using it to it's full potential, been playing around with some of the presets, etc.. but seem to be putting too much time into it for very little reward.

I have a fairly decent acoustic set in my garage, not even sure I want to mess with this anymore?

Got my son a vdrum set for Christmas

he can play them anytime and not bother a soul, tune them electronically, change all tones to his liking,
and record them silently as well as jam with backing tracks, iTunes, etc via headphones and his laptop.

not as tactile as acoustic but way more practical for his situation.

Yeah they have their pluses for sure which is the only reason I am looking at them. Some of the pads are louder then others. Might still not be as quite as some would need. Can kinda sound like someone's trying to kill a plastic box with a stick :-)

I am stunned..... Thats the best drum sounds I've ever heard, hands down. Looking over the link you sent. I really dont think the additional tweakability of AD helps when the sounds are that much better in OW, and they really are that much better....     Dam, technology has caught and run over me yet again :(
Email sent
Thanks - Jim
