I'm supposed be trading my 205 for a 86 JCM 800 2204 this Monday so I figured I'd do some comparison clips of od orange vs the jcm boosted with a sd-1. I obviously only have the jvm clips now, had some time today so I figured I'd play some 80's riffs and licks for you guys to hear both some rhythm and leads.

1st clip is some GNR

2nd is some VH

I should have the 800 clips up this Monday or Tuesday night I hope. I'll play the same riffs and stuff for a direct comparison.

thank you for this thread, I recently got a 77 JMP 2204 that I planned on getting modded, but its just too good sounding of a 2204 to mod, I don't have the heart. Thinking about unloading it for a JVM 205

I wouldn't mod a 77 dude, seems like unmodded ones are getting a little harder to come by. I probably wouldn't sell it for a JVM either though lol.

Here is the JCM 800 with the same set up boosted with a sd-1. Sorry if this was a little sloppy I just rushed through it to get a comparison. I'm way in the honeymoon stage, but the JCM 800 has a lot more punch and a better feel to it, also a lot brighter. More articulate and cleans up better with the volume. It does have a little less low end and of course a hell of a lot less gain but I'm digging how much more in your face it is. Less compression for sure, but playing leads is still very easy. I can't wait to hear in the band mix tomorrow night.

Edit: Even wore the same shorts lol!

Yeah I like the 800 a little better too, I don't want to jump to conclusions since I just got it, but it has a feel that the JVM doesn't. Also seems to fill the room better.

Thanks for taking the time to make the vids, very cool.

why use a JVM with an od pedal?

you want a JVM for not use them! just use your favorite cable and play it thru red mode man ;)

I like the 800 better too. Sound just like I remember mine sounding.

Those were jvm orange straight in, gain on about 4.

Has anyone ever ran a high gain preamp signal into the Low Impedance input of an old single channel 2204? With the 2204's gain set really low?

I'm away from home at the moment so can't test it out for myself. I'm just wondering how that would work as a "gain booster", like pushing it with an overdrive pedal?

You mean like running an effects send into the low input or just a rack preamp in? I would think it would be similar to running a distortion pedal in front?

If I was doing this I would have used Crunch red on the JVM, would have been a better comparision imo. Crunch gunned is very open with a big roar.

OD1 is hotrod marshall, different animal to my ears.

Yeah crunch red is supposed to be the 800 mode on the jvm. I just wanted to compare to mode I used most. I feel that crunch red was more compressed and muffled then the 800 with slightly less gain actually. The differences are small but noticeable. Od green is actually a little closer to the 800 IMO.

Oh and I forgot to mention the jvm has the 800 beat at low volumes and just the master volume is more useable in general. The 800 is A LOT louder then the jvm and the volume taper is not nearly as smooth. I pretty much only use my rig with my band so it doesn't bother me but just figured I'd mention that.

It just occured to me you have the 205 as well, I was speaking of the 4 channel so there could be differences.

LMAO!!!! I like the JVM alot better than the JMP
