I don't know which you'd like more..only way to tell is to play them both if you can...

but having played both I can tell you that they are ENTIRELY different amps...two completely different animals...

I mean, I COULD give you my opinion, but I think you already know what that would be =)

it's an entirely different kind of flying...all together...

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I think the JVM in is the best amp Marshall ever made.

how many people just voted without hearing or playing either or both?

Completely depends on the volume you're able to play at.....the Splawn is virtually unusable (fpr me) at low volumes. So bad, that when I first got my QR, I thought it was broken. Seriously. The JVM wins handsdown at bedroom type volumes, or for venues where volume is an issue.

However, (and it's a BIG however), at stage volumes (big places, not small clubs), the Splawn absolutely kills. I'd take it any day over the JVM if volume wasn't an issue.

Short version: If volume is an issue, JVM. No volume issue, Splawn

BTW, I'd get a QR

Old school thrash?? Engl? Can you imaging how huge Engls amps would have been in the 80s??

I think the Engl amps like the Powerball and Savage really have 80's thrash covered. The Powerball really does a great Kill Em All tone without having to crank it. And the Blackmore is probably even warmer sounding with a great clean.

The JVM is built like a cheap toy and i wonder how it holds up with guys who gig every weekend? If i didn't have to worry about volume i would go with the Splawn for metal tones. Keep in mind i would rather go with a boosted JCM800 over a JVM.

For $700 you can get also try a Boogie Mark III.

Engl's sound too modern for old school thrash IMO, especially the Powerball.

I'd also go with a JCM-800 with a boost. Maybe the Kerry King jcm-800 head?? which has a boost built in basically... i guess those amps are kinda pricey though?

I've heard the Powerball do some great Kill Em All clips. Keep the presence LOW, pair the amp up with some Greenbacks and it may get you close. IMHO, a lot of the "modern" feel comes from using V30's, detuning, and how you EQ your amp.

I'm not a fan of Engls at all, other people can make them sound cool, but not my cup o tea at all.

Which Engl's have you tried?

I have to agree with him, I've NEVER plugged into a "stock" Marshall and been blown away, until the JVM came out.

I agree, the Splawn really comes to life at stage volumes I loved it in that capacity.

If you are going to play at home at low volume levels, the JVM might be a better option.

I think the JVM is the best bedroom/low volume amp that Marshall has put out. Iv'e heard/played/owned plenty of Marshalls that just smoke the JVM for tone. Of course the JVM is the most versatile head they have made.

IMO this is MARSHALL, here is my 1981 2204 stock jcm 800 with EL 34's, pushed with a plank cranker, sorry for my playing   this will definetly do 80's

Sounds great. But i always thought the older JMP's or PLexi's were a bit smoother and just smoked when turned up and boosted.

Check out this one.

I've had a JVM and now have my 2nd Quickrod, and while I like both I preferred the feel and tone of the Quick Rod.

Juggy,
I would definitely say Splawn but then again I'm a dealer so take that with a grain of salt. Just cause I'm a dealer doesn't mean I have to have a Splawn Quick Rod at home for the last three years. I love mine!

I owned an 800 for 15 years so I have a pretty good idea what they sound like. I've played a number of different plexis over the years. I've played stock DSLs and TSLs. IMO JVM is the best stock Marshall to date. Of course my modded DSL is the cat's ass.

My main issue with the Spalwn is like alot of guys have said, volume. I do play out, and jam with friends, but the majority of my playing is here at the house, so Volume would definetely be an issue.

The splawn can sound pretty good at low volume. One of the best things you can do is put something like a Rocktron Intellifex, or a G-Major or something in the loop, and then turn the output down. Keeps the tone and sounds great at really low volumes.

As far as the JVM being the best sounding Marshall ever, I guess it depends on who's ears and fingers are hearing and playing it. I like the JVM but it's no where near my favorite Marshall ever, but it does sound great.

I haven't played either amp, but I've heard many great clips from the Splawn, but I haven't heard any JVM clips that made me want to buy one.

If it counts for anything....I have a Splawn OS 2x12 cab and the quality is top notch. I wouldn't mind getting a Quick Rod or Competition to go along with it!

Good luck!

:)

Gigged my JVM for over a year and never had any problems with it.

Mine has left the house 40-50 times with no problems.

Of course we NEVER heard about guys leaving Boogie MK pots pulled and shearing them off....no that never happens

I have sent Zorran three due to that happening
