I use the little yellow Moer compressor on the crunch channel of my SLO for a few dance/funk tunes we do depending on where we're playing. Works great for what I want it to do in that situation.
I´m not sure a compressor will get there on its own since the basic tone will be the same, you´ll need to get some EQ going on too. Back in the late 80s and early 90s the guys playing the SLO and X88 used rackmounted parametrics to boost the highs and lows in order to make it less midrangey.
Two knobs Keeley comp works great for snappy funk rhythm. Better use the crunch mode of first channel with low gain than clean mode. The tone will be more sparkly.
