As usual, very cool video. I’m a Kemper user and I have a few questions for you:

Why do you record the Kemper in stereo?
How do you use the Kemper “Volume” knob vs. the Kemper “Master Volume” knob and why?

Thanks :)

Thanks man. As far as stereo it probably doesn’t matter I just do it. I usually just turn the master all the way and dial up the channel master volume to taste. Most patches it’s all pretty hot because the level off the kemper is moderate. I don’t really know if there’s a magic combo I just use my ears and go.

This video giving me the GAS again lol. Time to listen to some Kemper clips.

Hi James,

Did you ever profile your Ocean Mod Marshall? If not you should its killer.

Jason from NC.

You hit the nail on the head with buying GOOD profiles. Just like recording/mixing/mastering is an artform in itself, I really believe profiling an amp is an artform. Some folks can really nail it, and some can't. SinMix for example has 180+ profiles in just the Dual Rec pack, tons of different cabs, mics, settings that you can use for just about any application.

Also, not all free stuff is terrible, Djemass on the Kemper forums has an absolute insane collection of Mark IIC+ profiles out for free. Still some of my go to's for Leads or otherwise. If you can't find them, send me a PM and I'll send them over.

FWIW, I'll hook any Rig-Talkers up with some free samples of proper profiles....Just hit me up!

I don’t know all the free ones. The free ones that come with Kemper was what I was referring to in the video. Most of those didn’t do it for me personally except the SinMix ones were cool.

James,

You mention in your video that you like to run the Kemper dry and add fx/pedals outside of the box. Do you hit the Kemper with any OD/Dirt pedals? If so, do you run them in front of the Kemper? I’ve got a bunch of pedals that sound great with a real amp but I can’t get them to sound very good with the Kemper. I’ve just about given up using external pedals.

I haven't used a pedal in front, probably be a cool idea sometimes. Though the higher gain profiles usually have plenty of gain.

I’d be very interested in what your take is if you ever do try different pedals in front of the Kemper with different gain profiles. Sounds like an idea for an “Ask James” video. :)

getting good profiles are EVERYTHING when it comes to the kemper. I especially like M Britt, and some Sinmix profiles also.

Yup. I probably use M Britt’s profiles more than everyone else combined. He’s a nice dude. I hit him up when I get the kemper and he cut me a deal on everything. I have his whole collections. His Matchless and Marshall’s are on every record I make.

So far, Choptones and Big Hairy Profiles have been the best paid profiles. I got Sinmix's sampler pack and wasn't blown away like so many other users. Any favourite profiles he does? I've been curious about getting Mbritt's Wizard profile. That's one amp I haven't come across much in Kemper-land. The Kemper is a game-changer when it comes to amp designs. It really surpasses any traditional moddeler. Its not perfect, but I play it soooooo much more than my real amps. And it really can be profile specific. I was playing on a Splawn profile that I wasn't digging, so I tried another Splawn profile and I was in hard rock heaven. And when I get a great tone, It makes me want to buy the real amp. Best gear purchase in recent memory.

I have some of my SPlawn Profiles up on the Rig Exchange. I thought they came out decent and some folks seem to dig them.

When I had my Kemper I was not feeling the BHP stuff or Choptones at all. I bought a few packs from each and felt they were "meh" at best. The MBritt Wizard in his Heavy Pack was not great. I like most of his stuff. His VH4 is RAD!

Some of the best stuff for me was the SinMix, Guidorist, V/Rad and Soundside packs. I at least saved all my profile purchases in the off chance I grab another Kemper.

If you ever grab another Kemper I think you would love the BHP Henning Bottle Rocket pack. It was profiled from my amp and they are killer! Sounds just like my amp! MBritt's 5150 pack is absolutely awesome too!! Cililab profiles are amazing! He just released a VH4 pack that is spectacular. I have never been a VH4 fan for some reason and his pack has completely turned me into a major fan.
