Anyone own or played of of Kerry's 4X12 cabs? If so, how did you like it?

Thx!
Todd

I have his closed back 4x12. It's a killer sounding cab, and my personal favorite. I know I'm forgetting some here, but I like it much more than the various Mesa, Marshall, Randall, and Diezel cabs I've owned and/or played. I took the speakers out of my Diezel and slapped them in the Wright to have an even comparison, and the Wright cab was bigger, clearer, and projected better with a wider sweet spot. At the expense of sounding a bit cork-snifferish it had an organic character to it with a nice "woody" knock that was not present in the Diezel. I'm not picking on the Diezel because it sounded great, but it was a pretty noticeable difference and the Wright just sounded better for my tastes. Also, when you get some volume going the Wright breathes nicely while still handling volume and bass really well, so it stays tight and put together without any flub at loud gig/rehearsal level volumes. The build quality and fit & finish are second to none as well. It's just a hard cab to beat imo.

In an attempt to be helpful to those concerned... I'm pulling back the "veil" of the "Wright" stuff,

I bought 2 of his 4x12 cabs a few years ago (for a small fortune) to add to my studio collection. they are very nice indeed! and it IS clear that he had a good attention to detail. however, I did take them apart at one point to see what the hype was about. meaning, removed the baffle and handles. also, removed the grill cloth for recording purposes (they are forever studio cabs) I did find discrepancies (however minute) what struck me as interesting is that his hardware choices were sub-par when compared to the legendary Stone Age cabs. which I also own and have taken apart as well. (I have taken apart all of my cabs and will list them below) I have the time resource and budget for such non-sense, I also have a passion of curiosity for such matters, as I assume a few of you do here as well. to the point then. do they sound "better" than the "others"... is the money justified? ..... no. definitely not. they are well made though (giving the nod to them over the Stone Age cabs for sure. as I highly regard Johns workmanship. much lower price point though.

So then. I made my own, "upgrades" to the Kerry cabs, to appease the voices in my head. (as I do to all my cabs for studio recording) also worth mentioning is they are indeed 13 ply Baltic birch. VERY dense and dry! and, as said elsewhere, the tolex application on the Kerry cab sets the standard for all the cabs I own...even better than the Stone age. which I reference here as the current (best available) cab on the market, now that Kerry has passed. I love and enjoy all my cabs and have spent many hours of joy dissecting each one and "enhancing" what I felt was a move to get more of what the cab was meant to be. each is its own thing and I use them all for different reasons on various tracks. this post was intended to be informative and helpful. am grateful for all cabs and custom builders of the world!

I’m curious what upgrades did you do to your Kerry Wright? I’ve had my Kerry Wright 412 for 6 years now and agree on your thoughts. I have in it a cross of 20 watt Greenbacks and Altec 417C’s. My favorite speaker combo so far. My Schroeder Tone Ring cab (no longer made, limited production) is probably my favorite sounding cab overall

Hey Brain, congrats on owning such great cabs! (y) Thanks for sharing and checking in. I Siliconed the front baffle, replaced the wood screws on the handles with machine screws and nylok nuts. also replaced the speaker mount screws and added loctite to all treads. replaced the wiring harness with OFC mogami 10 gauge. as well as added a nickel plated pure tone jack. and vacuumed every last particle I could out of the cab before I buttoned her up. she's now flawless. Oh and I made a new front grill cloth baffle cover using 1/2" Baltic birch retaining the original fabric that came with the cab. so, I can pop off the cover to position the mics closer, if need be, I do this for most of my cabs. I keep her covered with a Tuki cover as well.

I've peeked inside a few KW cabs. The tolex was good, as was the cloth. But as others have noted, pretty substandard hardware choices...such as Fender posts to put your speakers on and tightening up a very small nut on top. It was no better than my 1958 Gibsonette that used the same mounting hardware for a 10" speaker. Past that, nothing really to bitch about, but I didn't remove the baffle board to inspect further.
