I wish I lived in a walternet universe where different guitarists that can really play are the guitar heroes.

I have a chorus for you.

She's kinda hot, he's kinda weird...
What the fuck is Peter doing here?!!

I see where you are going with this, but one of those guys is still the odd man out...

Kirk's playing does suck for the most part though... RAndy's tone was great, Page was incredible and wrote some killer riffs. So really, one's person shit is another person's guitar god! Somewhere some kid worships the ground Kirk walks on. Remember, false gods are worshiped all the time lol..

they made it, because out there in the world of REAL musicians, what matter is feel, and identity. You listen to a Kirk HAmmett solo and you know it's him, you listen to Jimmy and you recognize him.

They all write CATCHY shit. if you wanna go extra technical, stay in the realm of jazz and complex heavy metal, you'll be happy but understand that you WON'T "Make it" becuause that doesn't appeal to the general public. And by general public I don't mean the dumb 15 y/o that listen to Bieber or Nicky Minaj, I mean large sums of people in general.

So again man, it's about identity and feel. Dylan has one of the worst voices TO ME personally but his STYLE is unmatched....and of course the quality of the writing is superb. But he could have made a living as a songwriter only, and not perform, but he developed a STYLE and uniqueness to him that appealed a lot of people.

SO who do u think is good??????? and i'll comment on that when u have posted a reply.... itll be interesting

Kirk made it because he is in Metallica. Is he a great guitarist? Well, I thought so when I was 14. He wrote some very memorable melodies and leads and a couple tasty riffs (Enter Sandman for example) and that's why he made it. Overall, he's really not a great guitarist at all if you're going by pure technical talent, and his tone stinks. But writing some catchy leads and being beside one of the greatest riff writers of all time hasn't hurt.

Are there better guitarists out there?? hells yes!! BUT Hamster made it b/c he is in Metallica. Anyone else can fill that spot but it would never be the same. He is an integral part of that unit.

Randy Rhoads tones were different. as was his style. He pushed the envelope w his playing not his tones... I think he could play on a broom and it would still be damn good!! nuff said there

and the whole aura of Jimmy Page is that he is sloppy!! No one else can do it like JP. anyone can play a Zep riff...but it will never quite have the feel like Page has...and to me the feel is more important than the skill.

Hmm.

There are FAR better choices out there for the "how did they make it" question :)

Kirk = identifiable metal lead playing
Randy = neoclassical playing with structures not heard before in the context of metal (helped too that Ozzy was a breakout icon at that time)
JP = his "slop" is his "phrasing" and it's brilliant, genius and highly identifiable

Odd man out? For sure, KH, but I still think he'd slay pretty well everyone here in a play-off given the chance. Who are we kidding?!?!

Maybe I missed the point, but wasn't the original post intended to be... (wait for it)

The real thread should be :

WTF is Kirk doing with his Framus and his chorus profiled on a Kemper ?

I thought there was a special area for HC refugees...

Anyhow, I'd love to be as as sloppy as Jimmy.

I knew some fantastic guitar players back in the 70's and a few in the 80's, local SF Bay Area guys who knew their chops really well, some made it and some did not. Of the few that did make it big were not necessarily the best of the area but were lucky in one form or another.

The music industry is a fickle beast along with its customers...
