Krank Nineteen80

I have only heard the few demos done at trade shows, but I am also curious about the amp. A few people have them on the Krank forum, but no recordings that I have heard of thus far.

Krank doesn't get much love or even like on this forum.
I played the pre-production demo amp last year about this time, for over an hour.
Definitely my next amp purchase.
Tone-wise it's harder than a Chadwick but not at all modern, nor nearly as tight as a Revolution.
Coupled with the new 1980 cab, (Eminence Governors) it's very Marshall-y - errr "classic" in tone.
The twin 6550 tubes are cranking out 80 watts and have a very Krank-like aggressive grind.
Amazingly mean sounding in a "vintage" sort of tone.
Absolutely wicked with a TS in front.

These amps seem to fly under the radar. They sound as good as anything I have heard.

Are they USA made?

I've had my Nineteen80 head for a few months now and it does what it does extremely well. What it does is really nail that modded '80's Marshall tone.Running through a Greenback loaded Marshall 1960 4-12,I compared my Nineteen80 to a friend's early '80s JCM800 and the Krank definately has more gain and is smoother and more refined in the mids, compared to the old Marshall. If you dig the hot rodded '80s metal tone, the Nineteen80 is a great choice.

I don't think they are USA made.

It says clearly,"Made in the USA" on the back of both my Nineteen80 and RevJr Pro heads.

They are made here in Phoenix actually (Tempe).

When asking about the different Krank models Chris Catero kept telling me I had to check out the Nineteen80 after telling him I had to Krankensteins (old and +).
We tried this out at NAMM, and it definitely has it's own thing going, probably the best sounding Krank for more rock stuff, sounds a lot cleaner, and clearer than the other amps by far.
However, as with all Kranks, I think you still need to use a Maxon OD808 to boost the front end...

Also, according to this video, it seems to work very well for heavy stuff too...Notice almost everyone has a boost there as well...

If anyone wants a good deal on a Krank, PM me. I have a special deal with them...

The more listen to clips, the more I think I might wan to try one. I had a Rev JR. Pro and thought it was too treble intense. I hope that's not the problem with the 1980. Why does Krank get so much hate on forums anyway?

I have yet to try any Krank. Would love to try anything from them!

I dug the "Plus" series amps. I'd buy one if the price was right. Great build quality from what I understand.

Is this a serious question? I can list the reasons if you need me too....

Serious question. Yup.

Is it because the word Krank is close to Crack...er Krack- and who would buy a Krack head? ;)

I've played every krank except for a 1980 and the chadwick and they had their ups and downs. They were also not the easiest amps to dial in. I remember getting some nice tones out of a Krankenstein + in a store, only to return a week later and think it sounded like poop. The same goes with the Rev Jr. Pro I had. It might have been a one trick pony because as soon as I adjusted the EQ away from the sweet spot, it sounded very harsh. The only thing I can think of for the hate is that people can't dial them in correctly. But I've been wrong before. maybe I'm wrong about the Krank issue too...

I will say they I never liked the SST. That was not a good amp!

Please don't shoot the messenger here. Remember you asked, not looking to debate the validity of these opinions that myself or others may have and please don't assume that these are all my opinions.

Anyway, here are the reasons I can think of:

1. Krank got caught by HC doing their own reviews
2. Most of the original Krank amps such as the first Krankenstein did not sound very good from 90% of the reports I read and clips I heard.
3. The name, just sounds lame, especially with starting it with a 'K'. The Logo looks cheesey IMO.
4. Krank fanbois. Krank either has the most devoted and loyal fans ever or they pay people to go on the forums and talk them up. I have not seen this type of loyalty from any other amp company users.
5. I haven't seen this in a while, but early on every Krank fan had to compare Krank to all the established companies saying that they tried them all and the Krank crushed them (this is closely related to number 4)
6. Resale value. Krank amps have horrible resale value, if you buy one new, be prepared to struggle to sell it or trade.
7. Krank marketing, its in general over the top. Just like Mesa can rub people the wrong way, so can Krank.

All that said, I would at some point like to try out a Krank, hopefully a store I visit has one the next time I am in. The Nineteen80 would be the model that would interest me the most.

If I'm to understand correctly... Their early amps sucked and from then on public perception and bad marketing/ PR kept them from being liked and taken seriously. Correct?

That's it in a nutshell.
