Getting ready to make a power amp purchase and have some questions about the above tubes and their interchangeability. The power amp is stereo and will come with a quad of GE 6550a's for one side and a quad of el34's for the other. In theory if the amp is set up for 6550a's, I should be able to swap in KT88's with no issues right? If this is the case can I use them in conjunction mixing 2 6550's and 2 KT88's within a quad? Any guidance is welcomed and appreciated.

I believe KT88's are 6L6 replacments, while 6550's are an EL34 replacment. Having both of the tubes together in the same poweramp would require some sort of mod.

OKAY!!!

I've seen 5150's modded to run two KT88's and two 6L6's. I assumed they were replacement equivelents. I also thought 6550's were big bottle EL34 replacments with more headroom on tap.

No offense intended. Just hate to see a guy buy the wrong tubes or something............ :aww:

Lol, I did a ton of research so I definitely wouldn't buy the wrong tubes! It's funny how little info is online about it though. I appreciate the help. I'm just trying to maximize my options. I've heard there is a tonal difference in the high end between the 2 hence the blend question. I can't believe how freakin expensive a quad of GE6550A's are. I mean compared to the Tung Sol's and other available options it's nuts. I plan on buying a bunch of different types and seeing what's what. Then once I have my M4 there's the pre tube game (then which with which module). This should be a lot of fun. While we're at it does anyone know what kind of tonal difference there is between el34's and 5881's?

edit: Answered my own question by visiting the above link. More 6L6ish. Very cool site. Thanks.
