Ladies and gentleman... Van Morrison

He uses the same scale and similar phrasing for all his vocal-melody lines.

So, even 'though the peeps I've known who love him can't understand why I can't listen to him, for me it's always been like listening to the same song over and over again.

Each to his own 'though, and I mean no disrespect to him; he's had a whole lot more hittoons than I probably ever will. Maybe I should try sticking to one scale.

?? Go to around the 4:30 mark and check out the strings fretting out. Nice clear buzzing to go along with that noodling. So awesome. ?

Funny but true:

Back in the late '80s I got to meet Ronnie and Jimmy Bain after a gig in Melbourne. I'd attended with a "mad" fan who insisted he knew which hotel the boys were staying in, so we went straight there after the gig and waited. Sure enough, Ronnie and Jimmy arrived in a white limo eventually.

We chatted for a few minutes on their way into the hotel. Only Ronnie spoke 'cause Jimmy was coking off his nut and was literally useless. My buddy eventually asked the question he'd always wanted to:
"What was your inspration for Stargazer?"
Ronnie stroked his chin as he thought about it for a moment, then said:
"Nothing, really."

My buddy was devastated!

Another interesting factoid:
Viv Campbell played on that tour, and a few years later I became good friends with his ex-girlfriend, who I literally bumped into outside my house in the 'burbs. We got chatting and quickly realised we'd both grown up in South Africa. Turns out she met Viv through playing pool with him at a late-night rock hangout, not even realising who he was. When he told her that he played for Def Leppard, she was like, "Who're they?".

Small world.

In regards to Steely Dan... a former bandmate once said; "You're not going to get a fart joke past these guys..."

Van Morrison was completely and totally ahead of his time in my opinion.

It was probably the extra 'f' that confused her

Oh, I dig his compositions... always have. I was curious as to how the "...that's not metal!" crowd would react? :)

But... that's not metal!
