I've heard these get a great old marshall kinda sound, yet on Jerry P's website he calls the amps "bright, buzzy, thin, noisy"

I've heard that Laneys are bright amps

any opinions

I just picked one up, and immediately found some really good mid gain tones. The pulled channel boost is fizzy, but I only started messing with things. There's a boost for each EQ setting, the bass boost is heavy and thick, no way with it pulled is anything thin or bright. With all the boosts off and everything set to 12 I found pretty decent tones. The master on mine is gradual, so you don't go from real quiet to arena in the first 1/4 of the dial. I have only just started fooling with it, but I think there's plenty of potential there.

I have the mod for converting to a JCM800. It is only a few simple changes. Let me know if you want it. I don't know how good it is. My buddy has one of them white tolex anniv. ltm. edtition ones. He is still unsure if he wants to do the mod. It looked very simple from what I recall and very easy to undue.

i've had my 50 watt combo for a few years now. these amps are very selective in what tubes they like in the pre amp section. experiment ALOT to find what works best for you. they do sound best with fane's too. they push the mids a bit and don't sound brittle like a vin 30. great amp for the 800 sounds if you take the time to tweak them.

I'm about to start messing with preamp tubes. I ordered a set of JJECC83, matched with balanced triodes. Right now it has a who-knows-how-old set of mesa 12ax7s.

it surprised me when i tried an eh 12ax7 in v-1. normally i'm not a big fan of eh's. i find them too bright for my tastes.. but for some reason it sounded good in v-1. i'm thinking something like a sylvania would sound pretty good in that position too. i've got an nos i could try in there. the eh went microphonic on me and i replaced it with an rca. while it's a great tube in its own right.. it's surprisingly a bit dark in this amp.
when i bought the amp it still had the original rft's in it. i pulled those.. put jj's in the pre. they were alright and tamed some of that buzziness that jerry p probably didn't like.. but it wasn't as open sounding as i would have liked.. so i started swapping. i haven't hit the magic combination yet.. but you can sure hear and feel the difference when you swap them around.

there are about a billion different versions of the AOR. From what I've heard some sound great and some aren't to special. IDK about Buzzy, I haven't come across that problem yet.

I have serial # 1009 of the AOR PTL 50 and it sounds killer, absolutely killer. It eats Marshalls
