5 watts is still louder than you realize. If you crank a 5 watt amp up to power tube overdrive levels, it is loud as hell. Better off getting a good attenuator than trying to crank a 5 watt amp, imho.

An attenuator for a 5 watt amp would be cheaper for sure, but nothing sounds like a high wattage amp than... a high wattage amp. Just doesn't have the thump and boom like a high watter. For recording, you can tweak the sound post processing and make a small amp sound huge, but in your bedroom... you'd be better off with a cheap modelling amp from vox or line6 in my opinion.
