Larry Amps and mods, anyone play/own them?

I have always wondered. Someone told me just to get the guy to mod your amp is very, very expensive. How do the mods/amps sound? Anyone here have one?

Someone on here owns the schaffer preamp.

In the past, Larry would monitor the forum for questions regarding his amplifiers. Probably not so much anymore.

Expensive is an understatement. You're looking at $6k+. He puts a lot of detail into the builds and does so one by one. He once said he might build 6 of anything in a single year, and that's pushing it.

IMHO there is no perfect piece of gear, so for the price there are other options for me. But I'm also not someone that is willing to drop 10k on a guitar for the same reason. His gear is aimed more towards the latter field where justification goes out the window.

I can't comment on Larrys Mods as I haven't heard/played one nor know the prices.

I can comment on Larrys amps though: Prices are (very) high, on the other hand I haven't seen any amp (and I have seen some other expensive ones) build with such an attention to detail. I guess he spends more time with an amp than most other builders fine tuning stuff, which is probably a reason for the pricing. Having heard the British Purist, Dino and played the Rock Wizard I think that you can hear and feel that. Voicing is a matter of taste imho, so if you like the voicing of a RW more or less than any other amp on the market can only be judged by yourself. What I can say, that I have not found any other amp yet that has the same dynamics, note separation, depth/3D and also sheer power of the Larry amps I played/heard. Also the RW is the most tweekable amp I've seen. Just check out his website to see what I mean. That amp can be tuned VERY much...

So I try to avoid the, are the worth the price (and wait) discussion as this is a thing everybody needs to decide for himself. I can see why the prices are higher than the prices for most other amps (at least all I've seen and payed in person). In a market where people are willing to pay the prices of Gibsons CCs I think the prices for Larrys should be easily acceptable.

I've gone through many other great amps but for me this is the best of the best for the reasons Alex_S mentions and more.

Often imitated, never duplicated !!!

Wow, that looks cool. What mods do you have in there? Is it voiced to some of his regular models?

Emailed him several times. No answer back. Guess he went off the radar.

I went to his website and clicked on some of the links and got the "More to come" message. Like you said, off the radar.

I don't hope so, that would be a significant loss to the amp builder community. His website isn't a good indication. Wasn't updated for quiet a while. He was for sure active when his website hasnt been updated for a while. But I don't have any current information either...

Are there any clips of the rock wizard? I've looked but didn't have any luck.

John Schaffer from Iced Earth is a Larry diehard and he does have some awesome tones on their records.

Not that I'm aware of. But demoing a three channel amp, with three sound modes each channel + tweakable boost + 3 other sound modification switches will be quiet a project (especially as the knobs all really make a difference). If I don't miss anything the RW has 120 "sound modes" + a hell lot of eq and tuning possibilities... :-)

Thanks. Its not a modded amp but basically a DINO model in a Marshall chassis. You've got to love an amp where the 100 W setting is the 'low power' mode :D I usually play in 150 W mode because the added low end really moves my balls

I am sure you are loving it. The DINO is a metal monster! So much more than just the Iced Earth sound in it. Most aggressive amp I ever heard....

I've met Larry in person several times and his amps are awesome sounding and very loud mothers.

The inside looks to die for, too. I watched him work, like a watch maker, white gloves and all.

Hi Hoss,

nice to see you here at RT! I've seen him work as well. As you described with gloves. He uses a ruler to get the components perfectly aligned. These amps are works of art and sound accordingly. To bad they are that rare...
