Yessss !!!

Only 100 pedals though, and no custom options.
No worries....
Snagged myself a Merman
My Standout from the indigogo campaign is freakin' killer, and I was kicking myself for not grabbing a Merman as well.
All is well now

I got an email saying I was "back on the list" so to speak.

But it said available after all graphics/etc finalized. And they look like the next gen of pedals, not like previous gen.

I would have bought immediately before but these look like the next gen (by that I mean, made in a more cost cutting way). So I just trashed the email and figured "I missed it". Are these the same as last round (aside from appearance)?

OK, so I went back through my emails from the VFE indigogo campaign and the recent ones from Peter, and this is how things look to me:

The pedals offered in the original indigogo campaign from earlier this year were re-designs of the original VFE pedals, but now built using Peter's new "Studio power & switching " circuitry. Some pedals would require a complete re-design to use the SPS system, and the redesign would occur over time and may not be compatible with all the old designs.
The indigogo campaign sold out, and these are the pedals we have been receiving over the last month.
Many of us, including me, contacted Peter in the last month or so and asked if there were going to be any extra pedals offered for sale.( I was looking for a Merman to go with the Standout I ordered during the indigogo deal ) His reply to me was "no, not at this time, but I will add your name to a waiting list in case I decide to build a few more"

Then just yesterday I receive an email that included the above link to the VFE website and details about a final run of pedals.

Below is a cut and paste of the text from that web page in Blue, with my comments added.

Due to high demand - and to fund building my own personal VFE pedalboard - I am offering one more run of pedals to be finished before the end of 2020. To keep the build process simpler, there are no custom color options this time. The color schemes you see below are all that is available. OK simple enough. He wants to streamline the process by limiting the cosmetic options available for each pedal. No problem.

I only have parts & time to build a maximum of 100 more pedals before the end of 2020. Pedals will only be listed AFTER the new circuit & graphic designs are 100% finished (several are still in development). I believe what he is saying here is that pedals will only be made available to purchase on the page linked above when the individual pedal models have been adapted to the SPS circuitry and the single cosmetic design has been finalized for each pedal. I believe he is still working to adapt some older designs to the SPS circuitry, but the pedals that are, or will be listed for sale on this web page for this last run are the same new SPS pedal designs that shipped recently from the indigogo campaign.

I should note that many of the new designs run optimally with current draw between 100-150mA. Some can take over 200mA (Rocket EQ + reverb pedals), and some take much less (Alpha Dog + Fuzz Duo). Some of the new SPS circuit designs use a charge pump to up the internal working voltage, and they consume a lot of current. Something to be aware of and plan for if you are thinking about buying these pedals.

I've already PayPal'd him the cash for my Merman, but anybody on the fence about the pedals offered in this run could just email Peter and get the lowdown from him. His response times can vary, but he has replied to every email I sent him.
I probably would have preferred a blue Merman with silver knobs, but at this point I'm just happy to be getting one before he shuts the door for good.

I am interested but the pedals I want look a little less desirable than I had hoped for. :(

Yeah that's the email I got, I also had contacted him just a little late for the last run. When I checked the Merman was not ready yet. I have a RYRA Klone that I'm happy with but chasing unicorn tone leads one to wonder if it is the best (short of the unobtanium real thing).

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean about chasing unicorn tone   .
I really dig the Klon type thing into a crunchy ( not too gainy ) amp as an option from time to time. ( MCII rhythm channel for example )
I've been happy with a Wampler Tumnus, an Archer Ikon, and a Mythical overdrive at different times recently, but I think I prefer the Mythical Overdrive right now.
But I'm really looking forward to hearing what VFE can do with the Klon concept.

I got a new Merman. Mine is SN001.

I like the Merman a lot. That said, I love the Ceriatone Centura with some NOS ECG109 diodes.

Dave what's your favorite pedal to boost the front end of an amp like a tube screamer?

Depends on the amp... but with my stock Marshall 2203 the VFE Standout is king. It just drives the amp in such a natural sounding way. With high gain amps I like the Standout and Pepers’ dirty tree. The Ceriatone Klon clone is up there too.

Is this the last, last run?
This will be the last run of pedals made by Peter Rutter
He is transitioning out of pedal manufacturing, and has licensed the VFE designs to a third party, who are supposed to begin manufacturing in 2021.

As far as I know, there is no info on who the third party is, when those pedals will be available or where they will be made.
That also means that there is no way to know what the build quality or tone will be like.
I'm also not sure if the license includes the new SPS power and switching, or just the original circuit designs.

If you want a Peter Rutter made VFE pedal, I would suggest you jump on this run.

OK I caved. :D But I probably should have waited due to this blurb in the email:
Most of the pedals on the waiting list are available. Of the couple that are not, I've left your email & pedal request in the waiting list to update you if they become available.

What I don't get is that blurb says "most are available" but when you click the link NONE are available, all say "pre-order".

Ended up ordering a Focus last night. I'm still contemplating getting either a new Dragon or Ice Scream also, hesitated because I already got a Dragon but kind of want the new/improved version too.
Also saw on Peter's Instagram that either later this week or sometime next week he's planning to list a bunch of the final prototypes on his Reverb page.

Anybody know what happened with his Scream pedal? Not be confused with his Ice Scream pedal...both of which are TS-type with lots of added tweakability.

I got my Standout maybe a month ago and the Merman on Saturday. Both with the SPS and new Switching System.

Both pedals are nothing short of amazing. They really give you a lot of control.

I have both pedals in white with black knobs. Green and red LED being the only difference.

Dave or anyone else that has the new version of the Merman....I can't really get the pedal completely clean. There is always a bit of grit added. Not really a problem.
Just curious if yours acts the same ?

Does the internal voltage pot effect the gain on the Merman ?
I haven't adjusted it.

I’ll see if I can get the Merman clean. I noticed with a high gain amp and turning up the level knob, I was getting some weird noises as if I was working the pedal too hard.

I have the Ceriatone Centura with some NOS diodes that I use for lower gain stuff. It just makes my CCV really sing in channel 1. I use the Merman to really add drive, but still give it that Klon feel. The compression knob is cool. Turned to the left has to be the germanium diodes since it clips more and is softer.

Turn to the left is Silicon.

If it goes clean or not it sounds fantastic and has much more range than any Klone I have used. I was running it into my Fryette amps and could get really raw and aggressive. Pretty impressive.
Agree the Compression knob is really useful. Nice effect on the sound and feel.

When running into a clean amp or channel it never really cleans up completely.

Friend of mine is bringing over his Rockett Archer on Saturday so I can get a clear comparison.
Only other Klone I have here is modified for high gain. So not the classic Klon.

Previous versions of the Merman he made very close to the original Klon. This new version has a lot more range. It's his idea of what the circuit could be...

I pulled out a bunch of overdrive pedals and the Standout sounds as good or better than any of them. Basically with any amp and guitar I can really control the sound. It's better than any EQ pedal I have used.

These pedals take a little longer to learn. But very worth it. I used the Dragon a lot since it came out and like these two better. Just subjective taste. They are all good pedals.

Tempting. The standout seems to get serious praise.
