Layne Staley's mom suing AIC

How many songs did she sing for AIC? Is it ZERO? That's how much she deserves.

Sounds like they have paid her more than she was legally supposed to get up to this point too. She got used to the money and now that it is stopping, she wants more. Interesting.

The band's point that their operating contract with Staley ended with his death is important. His heirs, and his mother is probably first in line since I don't think he was married or had kids, would be entitled to part of ongoing royalties, but no percentage of the current band earnings. It's pretty gross IMHO, what McCallum is doing. You don't see Mike Starr's heirs suing.

Staley was the best known member of Alice in Chains during the band's 1990s heyday, which saw the release string of hit albums including the quadruple platinum “Dirt.”

Says who? I think Jerry was pretty well known too. Also who held the band together when Staley was in his heroin induced coma?

This will provide a nice shit stain on Layne's legacy. Some mother's day. :gethim:

Yea they've come to Sue the rooster, you know he ain't gonna pay!

Do not click any links/advertisements on the link Steve_K provided. I just picked up a nasty virus off that website.

I can sort of see her getting royalties off of sales of Layne-era music, but current stuff? Fuck no. And even the Layne era stuff would depend heavily on what contract they had/have.

"Paterno noted that Staley’s heirs would continue to receive royalty payments on songs he wrote or co-wrote. The attorney went on to threaten to take legal action against McCallum if she didn’t drop her attempt at trademarking the band name."

Pretty cut and dry, and straight forward, if you ask me.

Ongoing royalties for what he participated in: DONE
His "interest" in the band at the time of his death (379K, she has gotten closer to 800K): DONE

I agree that she is marring what is left of his name. When her son died by his own choices, her free ride was over, and now she is bitter.
Sorry, but that is not the surviving members problem........they chose to get their shit together, so their money is THEIR money, now.

This really depends on how the contracts were written initially when Lane was alive. She may have a case. Who are we to Judge her without knowing the legalities. If it becomes public that she does not have any case then shame on her being an ungrateful pig.

From a distance and with nothing more to go on, seems awfully greedy....

I'm on the fence without knowing the facts. Lane's Mom is his heir. Without Lane, Alice in Chains probably would not have been. The band never would have been able to reform if it wasn't for what Lane did with them while he was alive. Their new songs probably would never have gotten far if it wasn't for Lane's legacy. Regardless that he is dead, he is still making money for Alice In Chains. His heir may have a right to ongoing royalties based on what the band is doing now. Allot of things to look at here, the most important being the original contracts between the members. I would not be at all surprised if a Judge awards her regardless if she's greedy or not.

So its the bands fault that Layne liked to stick needles in his arm ?

Layne has nobody but himself to blame for his demise.

AIC is way past the Staley factor IMO.

Odd how the Godfathers of grunge Cobain & Staley couldn't survive their own success.
