I know a guy selling one of these. It's the early "fender" version. Any first hand experience with these preamps? I played it for a minute or two not knowing he wanted to sell it. I didn't touch the knobs and it was through a 1x12 with unknown speaker at VERY low volume. Sounded pretty cool and seemed to have a good amount of gain. I have no idea what it would sound like loud with a 4x12 and 100 watt tube power amp. Would just be a curiosity buy to play with for a while.

I've had a few. They're ok to use as a boost to the front end of an amp. JCM800s love them from what I remember. But on their own through a poweramp, you're probably going to pretty underwhelmed.

Don't have firsthand experience with the GP-1000, but did own an XLS-500 head and Lee Jackson 4x12 cab once upon a time. I do miss that amp. Good cleans and a distortion that was smooth and heavy. Great for liquidy leads... perhaps a tad bit overcompressed. The reason I got rid of it is that it just didn't have much thump to it, regardless of the settings. For reference, I tried other heads through that cab also... the cab was fine.

It's a good 80's metal/shred amp. Not so good for thrash and the like. Very much a modded JCM-800 as opposed to the 5150/Recto style.

I don't think I want to drive 50 miles and spend $150 to be underwhelmed.
50 miles and $150 is a steal for one now, actually, thanks to Alexi Laiho running the price up on them now. They're not nearly as high gain as Lee Jackson's amps were from what I remember but running into the front end of a Marshall, they sound pretty good. Still, you could always turn it around for $500+ on ebay!
