I've been wanting a Les Paul and there are way too many of them. I hate whimpy thin neck profiles and lean towards baseball bat necks. Which years LP's and LPC's have fatter necks and what are the ones to avoid in terms of poor production years?

I think the 57-59 re-issues have the neck you are looking for, you should def get out and play some first, IMO I like the R8s, I bought a simple plaintop years ago and its my favorite. I do not buy too many guitars without playing them first though, dont pick the guitar, let it pick you.

50th neck it a baseball bat, 60th is thiner. Les Paul Customs normally somewhere in between, leaning toward 60th.
I remember I had Shred-X Explorer, the guitar was made with shreders in mind but it was one of the biggest failures in guitar history.
50th neck, Kahler without locking nut just o not go together wit hword SHRE.

They vary. I've got a '68 with a Louisville neck on it - by gawd man, that thing is like a tree trunk, but it sounds JUST as fat :yes:

I'll post the years of reissues with their varied necks later today - it's on my other computer, but for now http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topi ... k-profile/ this is some stuff.

Peace,
Mo

great info there. Thanks so much.

I appreciate all the replies fellas :rock:

I own a bunch of lesters and the bigger necks are on the 57-58-68 reissues, any of those is thicker than a 59 reissue. The 60 reissue is a thinner neck than the 59.

My 67 has a fatter neck than my 75 but I have played thicker and the years have been all over the place. Generally though the pre 70's seem to thicker. A note for you, the thickest neck I have is on my Dean.

The '57, '58, '59 historic's neck profiles made before 2006 are pretty consistent in this fashion:

R9=Big
R8=Bigger
R7=Biggest

There will be some variability, so put your hands on it if possible.

the 50s neck profile is fatter essentially

60s is the slim style, there are variations within that but that's the best guideline i guess

i usually go for slimmer necks but the 50s neck on a LP studio i have is awesome

I thought they didn't begin making them again until '68?

Dont know how to explain it... Everyone who has played them has said the same thing to me also. Its not marked as a custom shop or anything unique but some years ago when I had it in Vegas with me I brought into Ed Roman and he thought it could be an early 68 series but made late in 67 and there could be a handful of them made Nov-Dec time frame. We did a quick comparison to a few he had in the shop marked 68 and they were so close it was hard to tell.

I guess I just have a very strange beast !
