Lets get this out there...

Eric Clapton. With the exception of some Cream. Slash  Never thought Slash was anything special for all the attention he gets. Satriani - never warmed to him (I like Vai though). I tend to listen to who I like, and ignore those I don't like though I may listen to them on occasion. I don't like "new metal" either (I'm fitting into my theory described below). For the last few years, I'm going back to my earliest music experiences: The Beatles, early Stones, early Floyd, '70s Yes, Small Faces / Faces, Humble Pie, ELP...early rock, early prog rock, '60s / '70s pop, '70s boogie rock...

I liked U2's earlier work probably up to the Joshua Tree or around that time, I saw them during the earlier days around War, maybe before. I like early VH too, I saw them open for the original Black Sabbath in'78 on the Never Say Die tour - amazing, DLR's aerial splits, Ed running up his amp, doing a backflip running toward the audience and sliding to home plate all while playing. Ed's work was groundbreaking back in the day - I experienced it first hand, certainly more than someone like Slash.

I have a theory though... :D It seems to me if you experience music while its happening its much easier to get into (and for most people, while they are in their teens/early 20s). If it was before your time or after, it seems to be much more difficult to like or get into. One example, in my teens we were into the new British Metal (Priest, Maiden) and older stuff like Sabbath, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, Nugent, of course Led Zep. I was playing in bands, and a few of my friends did as well, we got into Accept,UFO, eventually Metallica, Slayer and later bands...my friends that didn't play seemed to have stopped listening to new music in their mid 20s, and would tell me they hated Metallica, etc., and other "new" metal was crap compared to the "good" or "real" metal they liked! Just a theory... ;)

I don't like AC/DC or Dream Theater.

Nobody likes Dream Theater, do they?

I thought Petrucci fanbois hated James LeBrie just as much as everyone else.

I never got Tom Morello. Can't listen to Vai/Satch for more than about 5 minutes. To me, its still about the song, and the guitar is a key part to the song. I have a hard time tuning out bad vocals, or over the top guitar playing. Dream Theater - forget it, too techinical. I guess I sorta just like good-ol-fashioned-dumbed-down rock'n'f'n'roll!

I will second the bit about people thinking the best music is the stuff that was new between when they were 15 and 25...

I love Dream Theater. I don't understand why there is so much hate for LeBrie. I think he's a very talented singer and I like his voice.

I hate U2. Boner is a cock-bag. Also hate Pearl doesn't Jam, Springstein, Dave Matthews, all the talentless record-player rhymers (rap), cookie monster growlers, and all the emo boy bands.

I don't like Tool, I don't like Van Halen and I don't like U2

I should maybe because they're some of music big ones, but I cannot get into them.

you have a band you're "supposed" to like but just cannot ?

I agree with you about Tool and anything U2 post Rattle and Hum. Cant go with you on the VH.

As far as bands go, I dont like Iron Maiden, like Rareguitar I hate the speed for speed stuff with the Cookie Monster vocals. Can't listen to Malmsteen much. And dont get the infatuation with Doug Aldrich's tone.

All that said..... different tastes are a good thing. Makes the world a more colorful place.

I hate U2, don't like tool, and hate cookie monster vocals. I used to listen to bands with vocals like that just for the instruments, but I can't even do that the vocals are so bad.

Not into all the fret-wankers and such....Petrucci, Vai, Satriani, Malmstein and all that lot  . Great guitarists I am sure. Boring as hell to listen to.

Big into Tool though...

My wife is Irish, so I can't talk bad about everyone's favorite Irish boy band else I get a slaggin :gethim:

YES!
Led Zepplin - has grown on me more in recent years.
The Doors - HATE EVERY SONG I'VE HEARD!
Jimi Hendrix - Sloppy drug induced mess... LOL! :D I know it was innovative for its time, but I can't get into it.

Most classic rock actually.

You're young...that's all ;) I'm in my 40's and glad to have experienced music and bands when they were actually good

I can't stand most any 80's metal (there are a few I do like) and I don't like any virtuoso guitarists. I also can't stand "Nickelback" style modern rock.

Shawn Lane...the guy has rediculous chops (probably the fastest guy I've heard so far), but his songs did absolutely nothing for me. I'll probably get banned for saying that here   I love Satch though, and Vai is hit or miss (some of his stuff is so pretentious, other stuff is amazing).

Dream Theater too, though they do have a couple of awesome songs here and there. Tough to wade through the "bad" stuff to find the good, the keys and vocals are just so annoying at times. A couple of songs on Octavarium were pretty sweet. I've liked what little Liquid Tension Experiment I've heard though.

I wish I could be a patriotic Neil Young fan, but I can't. He writes great songs...he just needs to get someone else to play and sing them for him :)

Cookie monster vocals don't actually bother me that much, I find them easy to tune out, more so than a nasally or whiney voice. Don't listen to much of this stuff though, unless the guitarists are really good- otherwise there's no point.

Wow, there are a few bands mentioned here that I love and wouldn't expect to see, but that's the great thing about Rig-talk...we're an eclectic bunch :)

Nirvana
GNR

I can't think of any other bands I hate so much. I never got so into Anthrax either.

+1 on nirvana

I forgot about them

Van Halen, U2, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, GnR, others I'm sure...can't stand those bands.

Nirvana ,Nickelback,Stained,Disturbed and Pink Floyd, i cant even describe how much i hate them.but David Gilmore has some nice lead tones.

as a guitar player i can not understand how a dude who plays rock guitar doesnt like VH,that just baffels me,but VH is my favorite band,so i guess thats why.

Iron Maiden. Yeah, I said it. Bruce has THE WORST vibrato EVAH!!!!!!! :bash:

U2. "The Ledge" doesn't know how to turn off his delay pedal, and Bono is just pompous.

Nickelback is a joke, right? :aww:

Warren Dimartini is good and all, but RATT is just embarrassing. :lame:

And pretty much any "modern" rock band in the vein of Disturbed, Godsmack, Stained... :jerkit:

And CREED! Shit! How could I forget them?!?! And not just cause of Scott Stapp. Tremonti is just terrible.

Basically all that's trendy - hate that. Also all that 80s era with fag-faced bands (Poison and the likes). Don't care much for "fast-technical-can-do-a-zillion-notes-in-a-second" stuff, although some Petrucci stuff I find nice. I'm not into "black-speed-thrash-post-modern-gothic-detuned" stuff also.

Stuff that I'm into: King Crimson, Genesis (Peter Gabriel era), Van Der Graaf, Yes, Led Zep, Saga, Rush, Weather Report, Brand X and the likes. Grunge era was great - Alice in Chains, early Pearl Jam, Soundgarden to name a few.

Mainstream stuff sounds all the same, all bands use the same amps. The only mainstream I like is Foo Fighters, Grohl's raw energy is pretty hard to beat.

The music I'm into probably reveals a lot about my age. In my band, I have to play Bad Girlfriend and it's a huge pain every freakin time I have to do it.
