So I bought this amp (well, traded it from another forum member years ago) - its a JMP 2204 and my word, its got balls.

Currently smacking it with a tube screamer and a Blackstar distortion pedal, and Im loving it. I also just ran my Quad preamp through the front end.........uber grind-crunch!

If theres any other owners of old 70s Marshall JMPs, how do you run them? This is an old amp but it seriously crushes...

also a '76 "1986" model, Mike, modded of course (2nd Master, Gain, Depth, Voicing, 2nd "channel").

edit: here is it in company with another (100s) JMP - should sound a bit better (the recording, still the same amp/mods)

edit 2: here's an 80s (also a 50s), which I've modded lately (clean channel on back, loop, meaty gain channel)

The EQ is quite interactive Olaf, little changes make a big deal, unlike some of the more modern marshalls.

The Clean sound is also very nice. I've been missing the EL34 sound...

3rd clip is the best btw! Sounds great! Guten tag!

What are you boosting it with?

Very cool tone and great playing too

Thank you. I'm using a Bloody Murder overdrive. Not many out there and I don't even know if Joe's still making them. I love it with the JMP.

Same to you and more of it! ;)

Been using them forEVER. I dont have any MV JMPs right now , but Ive got a pair of 1974 JMP Superleads. Ive bought and sold more JMPs over the years than I can count. I love them all , but I still havent found THE master volume JMP yet. Always on the hunt

I slam the front end with a Wylde Overdrive, Friedman is modding one of mine now.

I have a 1973 50w JMP Bass and I LOVE that amp. I mainly run it clean(ish) and get the OD from pedals as this works best for my gigs and bands but I´ll run it thru a Hotplate at home and it crunches like there´s no tomorrow. It has a PPIMV (thanks Olaf).

A buddy running my Tokai LP into the JMP with the matching cab, no pedals. And then there was some goofing around

I have a 1978 100w that is my main amp, although it is FAR from stock....

I rebuilt it on PTP turret board and I re-designed the whole amp. It's now got 5 gain stages, Tube buffered Loop and regulated DC heaters, external bias etc. It sounds insane!

here is my 1977 2203, pushing the front with a modded TS-9

.....1980 2203 modded by Tony Krank. I run through a Catalinbread Super Chile Picosso boost straight into the amp.....it's heading off to Dave Freidman for the KS Mod after I get past a couple of gigs...
It's been my main amp for the last 17 years.

That still sounds absolutely stupid! You can hear mine in my avatar can't you, it's floored!

They are great amps and I have owned over ten personally and played many more. One thing about them is that they can vary greatly from one to the next, but when u get a great one they are priceless. Also great mod platforms and built like tanks compared to most modern amps.

Just re-acquired one of these monsters (stock '79 2204). I didn't know how much I missed the raw Marshall crunch. I've been using my Barber LTD set to almost no grit, volume wide open, and tone at about 3:00. It get's me the perfect "over the top" crunch, with absolutely no flab. I've actually really enjoyed going from playing my "everything, super complex" Egnater M4 rig to the simple, single channel rig. I'm sure I'll flip flop a lot, which is why I'm planning to build an even more complicated rig that will allow me to get to the "guitar > amp > cabinet sound anytime I want.
