Let's talk cabs - need new cab for Bogner XTC

Bought way too much gear this week including a bogner xtc 101B. I don't really want to use it with my Marshall 1960 slant cabs (I have a 900 and an 800) and I'm not sure how it's going to sound with my palomino (kinda tan colored) Randall MTS 2x12. To be blunt, the Randall smokes the Marshall cabs, but it's tan and It just kinda bugs me when cabs and heads don't match colorwise.

So, I'm thinking about getting the bogner 2x12, or the Avatar 2x12... or even the Avatar 'vintage' 4x12. All three seem to be an upgrade over the 1960 Marshall cabs.

The Vintage 2x12 Avatar looks like a knockoff of the Bogner... Avatar also seems to make a knockoff of the Orange 2x12 also. 4x12 looks kinda bognerish too.

So guys, let's talk cabs... I don't want to sacrifice tone for a few bucks, BUT I don't want a 5% better sound for twice as much money. You know the drill. Also any suggestions in the same price range... looking for at least a 2x12, sealed back, to match the looks of the bogner too.

Halp!

I just won an auction from Avatar for one of their Vintage 4x12s for $366 + $59 shipping last weekend. Hopefully have it this weekend. I'll let you know how it is.

i recently upgraded from a mesa 4x12 to a bogner uberkab..the clarity and tightness of the uberkab was pretty amazing. no harsh fizzy frequencies etc. also the mix of speakers gives it a fuller tonal spectrum which is awesome. bogners cant be beat for construction quality..and their reasoning for alot of building decisions in the cab has paid off. id reccommend trying one out, esepecially since you already have a bogner head.

PM Danhops Pete, he has gut pictures of both Bogner and Avatar oversized 2x12s as he had both at the same time.

Bogner 2x12 or 4x12 with V30's or H30's? I played that head into a Bogner 4x12 with V30's - probably the only time I ever liked V30's - sounded great!

Other people have said that amps sounds good w/ greenies too. But be careful with a 2x12 and that head as that would only be 50w.

I've used mine with a Marshall with Greenbacks, my Mesa with V30s and my new Bogner with V30s. The Bogner sounds the best, and it's not just hyperbole, it really is that good. I say the Bogner.

Bogner OS 2x12, I can not say enough good things about the special character that this cabinet has, but it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to like it. I can tell you what I didn't like it with: Mesa Traditional 4x12 with V30s, this cabinet was rattling like a tractor with 101B.

If you are going to play it live really high volume then get a 4x12. 2x12 will give you more midrange, 4x12 will be more low end heavy. 2x12 kinda has more wood in the sound.

Hey Pete! Guys used to say that the Avatar fancy 2x12" cab is really made by Mojo Musical Supply and is really high quality. I don't know of any way to verify that, but I've read that several times over the past few years. Not 100% sure about the fancy 4x12", but I'm pretty sure that's supposed to be nice too.

Have you owned an Ecstasy before? If not, maybe you should wait to see if you're going to keep the head before getting a matching cab? A few months ago, I was REAL close to buying a new Mojave 4x12" cab to match that Peacemaker I had and loved. I'm super glad I didn't, because I ended up trading my Peacemaker back for my old VHT.

Of course, now I'm stuck with a VHT cab that doesn't match anything either... Ehh, it sounded good when I was typing it in. lol...

GO FOR IT!

Yeah, I hear ya on the 'am I gonna keep the XTC' thing... I played BrentSPs a few years back, and Jerry's, and one that Scottosan had at the texas amp fest years ago... I really liked the amp, but couldn't see spending that much. I recently wiped out several guitars I haven't been playing and went on an amp buying binge... even if I ditch the XTC I'll probably buy another high end amp - sig x, slo, who knows.

I have only heard good stuff about bogner cabs, but again, if I can save hundreds of dollars and lose 5% tone, I'll go that route. :)

Pete

In my opinion, the best match for an XTC is a Bogner slant 4x12 with V30's/H30's in an X pattern. I really like the amp through my Marshall AX with GB's too, but if I could only choose one, it would be the first mentioned. Sounds real good through the Uber cab too (V30/75). I've had, tryed, and compared A LOT of cabs, and the Bogners are just the best IMO. People can say what they want, comparing construction, etc, etc. But there's something about the Bogner cabs that when you play through one, you know right away...

I prefere slant cabs in general and it's the same with the Bogners. I think if you get yourself a Bogner 4x12 slant (and I'd put 2 H30's in it), it will be a cab you'll keep for a long, long time. Even if you get rid of the XTC down the road. I've had my slant longer than any piece of gear I've owned.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with the 2x12's.

Bogner cabs FTW!

Bogner has better woodwork, and better tolex. I think the Avatar sounds great, but between both 2x12's the Avatar is a bit brighter sounding with the same speakers. The Bogner sounds a bit bigger and rounder.

You want to buy my Avatar Vintage 4x12 with G12H-30's? :)
(wheat grill, 16ohms)

It's perfect, in fact, I probably still have the box for it. It literally arrived, sat in the living room for a week, then moved to the bedroom since then, and had my Metro Plexi sitting on top.

I sold my amp head, so I don't really need a cab (granted, I did this last time with a 2x12, and bought an amp and cab a few months later...) - in either case, if I don't have a cab, I won't buy an amp, and I can't afford to buy an amp! :)

Dave told me himself - they were mojotone cabs. Now they're made by someone more local to him.

The person he has doing them does some fantastic work...

A buddy of mine bought the avatar vintage 212 recently. He said the cab sounded great, but rattled at high volumes, so he ended up returning it. I was surprised he didn't try to tighten the screws.

I personally find matching cabs overrated, I usually keep the good cab and just swap out heads. GAS is a horrible thing...

Well, maybe not matching as far as one for each head... I mean, I have like a dozen amp heads here. I just wanted some that matched color-wise and still sounded good. I nearly crapped when I cranked my 2x12 Randall and it sounded bigger/better than my 1960 slant Marshall cabs.

I love the bogner cabs, but I just recently picked up a Cameron 4x12 and it's absolutly killer... I had mine loaded with h30's and it kills, You can also do an x pattern with CL80's and H30's which im actually dying to try!

The cabinet is super 3d and it projects incredibly...

FYI I emailed Dave at Avatar and asked about the Vintage 4x12s and he said they have "rabbit and dado Joints" and are made from a company other than Mojo.

Pete, I'd go Bogner 2X12 or the Port City OS 2X12 if I were you. Everything else is pretty distant tonewise in 2X12 land IMO. Mesa 3/4 Back 2X12 would come in 3rd place.
