I love Explorers for a lot of reasons, love the feel, the way they hang off a strap, all mahogany etc... They just look cool to me. I had one years ago when I was touring and hated dealing with it because the case was so big and it didn't sit well in a normal guitar stand but now I'm mostly in the studio I could have one. Looking for it to be pretty slammin' sounding. Any model in particular? Pickups? ect...? I want it to have a slightly hotter bridge pickup, nothing to high output, maybe around 12-14k. I have an old JB and a Marshalhead in my office. Maybe one of those. Not sure, what do you guys think? Post any pics of your Explorers.

Hamer Standards are awesome. The higher end Dean Z stuff is great too.

I think this is as sexy as they come.

Thought you were talking about an old NJ band. :D

Honestly I didn't even think of anything but a Gibson. I'm such an OG guitar dude.

Yeah, a KL is definitely the pinnacle, but damn they're pricey. His web-page seems to be gone. If I had a spare 5 large and a year to wait for a guitar, I'd be all over one.

I had one like this......Sliver with Black Bevels....EMG's....

it freaking rocked!!

I am getting serious Voodoo GAS.

To the OP; James, I believe most explorers come with the 500T/496R pickup combo. It's what came in my V and what I keep coming back to in my Les Paul. Somehow, Gibson pickups just sound right in Gibson guitars. IMO.

I had an early '90s gibbo explorer with bkp painkillers for a while, man that thing sounded so ridiculously huge! It's like playing a massive tuning fork or something, they just resonate like nothing else.
Only reason I sold it was because I'm not a fan of the 24.75" scale at all and needed the cash but it was such a nice guitar.
A friend of mine owns an ESP MX-250II and that thing is just incredible, if you ever come across one and have the spare cash don't hesitate. My gibson was fantastic but that thing is in another league.

I am a huge fan of the gothic series, and a fan of the used prices as well (I paid $650 for mine with the case in very good shape)

Bare Bones, No Frills and IMHO one of the last great studio Gibson runs.

I had one for years and regret getting rid of it everyday, it had a super rich unique tone that you can't replicate with most guitars.

ESP Made some great ones in the early 90's as well that I've seen pop up recently very reasonably.

Yeah..........the gothic or the Voodoo are both a nice BASIC Run from Gibby.
I plan on getting either from the SG or Explorer run.

A RAN explorer sounds great! It also feels really good to play. COnsider one of those. and brad, you have the Guitar Im gassing for the most right now

Get one of the Gibson Explorer Pro's. This one is mine. It's a 90% body which makes it just the right size.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure its $6800 and 18-24 months currently. Well worth it IMO. Paid $3500 for mine used :D

What does 90% body mean? Is it smaller?

Explorer Pro's are 10% smaller than the standard models. I want one!

Brad bought the explorer I wanted, the Hetfield one above. Hell of a guitar.

Yes, it's 10% smaller than a standard explorer. Makes it just right.

The standard size is in the back, Pro in the front.
