I know he is associated with the Sandoval and later the Jackson Proto types but his sound to me is the white/creme Les Paul with those T - Tops in it. Cleaner humbuckers with more gain added from the cascaded Marshall, Disto + and EQ bump. Who makes the best player in the 1K range that won't bust the bank?

I'm thinking white or cream, maybe a pickup swap for something like an Air classic or T-Top built by one of the builders out there. Burny RR? Edwards? Epiphone? Tokai? I just got a Schenker Edwards V and it is a total player. Fantastic sounding and amazing feel. Definitely quality finished. A bit light and I hear that about the Edwards LP's as well. But really, will that affect the tone that much? Share your experiences with any of these guitars or similar.. I'd have no issue picking up another Edwards. Really happy with the quality.

I wouldn't rule out a white Gibby Studio if you can find the right deal. Sometimes those guitars are amazing. My good friend and former co-guitarist had one and that guitar played and sounded amazing. And I believe one of Vivian Campbells main Les Pauls now is a white Studio.

I had a white ltd ec1000ctm that screamed Randy...except the emg's. Full thickness and double bound body. I should have kept it and swapped pups...I'm 50/50 on emg's....

Yeah I have seen a few creme or white with EMG's in it and it's a turn off. Sort of like skinny fat on a girl. I am just not a fan of the active stuff.

I would go with your idea and get a Edwards in white/creme and do the pickup swap with T-Tops.

I just got an old Edwards LP. It’s killer. Looks like hell but it’s a player and sounds amazing.

I had a cream Edwards Les Paul Custom that was ridiculously heavy. So heavy I got rid of it despite the Rhoads vibe.

I think you need the Norlin construction (maple neck) and the custom‘s ebony fretboard are essential for the tone.

Really eh? That's the first I hear of an edwards being heavy. I think that would be a deal breaker though you are right. I have a michael Kelly patriot which I think is perfect weight wise. My V is crazy light and I quite like how it doesn't dig into my shoulder. It is really resonant so you " feel" the strings against your body.

I have both Norlin maple and non maple LPCs. You absolutely have to have the maple neck to nail early Zakk wylde, but you can nail Randy era with brighter speakers and turning the treble up. Zakks tone doesn’t work doing that. This is all IMO with a Norlin that is loaded with T tops.

I’d say go Edwards and load it with the pickups you want. They’re killer guitars.

Of course if you have the money for Norlin LPCs with maple necks then by all means they’re cream of the crop but they’re getting really rare and really really expensive.

he used altecs for speakers right? or was it something else...can't remember...

The nice thing nowadays is you can get IR's for whatever speaker so you can get even closer.
Load T tops in whatever solid LPC you want - Edwards or an Eclipse, load up an Altec speaker IR, and I believe you’ll nail the RR tone with a Marshall style JCM800 amp.

Zakks tone is unfortunately a lot more dependent on the maple neck. Nothing I did to my amp added the snap that was missing until I plugged in a maple neck LPC. The mahogany and rosewood stuff out now just doesn’t cut it.

Hope this helps.
