I have a few fender teles also, but this one rules the roost...

the next on my list

Thanks for your help so far guys! I really appreciate all the love on my threads as of late.

A traditional butterscotch blonde is definitely on my wish list. I recently was able to A/B a Fender CS relic with a Nash copy...the Nash smoked the Fender in every way imaginable at less than half the price. I can see adding one to my stable in the near future.
My current Tele ('89 James Burton sig) is cool but has more in common with a Strat...the only true Tele tones come from the bridge pickup, and then only because I replaced the Lace Sensors.

Sweet Axe.

I'm probably picking up an American Standard in 3TS with a maple board. I'm going to replace those horrible input jacks and the pickups though.

If you want a Tele get a nice Fender one. The Road Worn's are great. I would not get any of the Deluxes, split coils, humless etc... Get a real Tele. I'm a Tele guy bigtime, I recently got a Road Worn and threw a set of Lolar Special Ts in it, inspired by a Nash Tele we had at the studio for a while that was killer. The Road Worn with Lolars is deadly. The only mod I did was a got a Fender vintage bridge (6 saddle version) and replaced the original tail piece. For me I can't play a Tele with 3 saddles, the intonation issues are a killer in the studio. My ear is way to acute for tuning for that scene. But get a good Fender, it's classic.

James,

If I do end up using it for high gain, the stock pickups, or even the replacements you mentioned, are going to buzz like crazy, aren't they? That is unless I use the middle pickup position.

The American Standard I'm getting will need the input jack and bridge saddles replaced (it has individual ones), as I mentioned before. I think I may give the stock pickups a shot before I think about getting new or upgrading.

Right now I have a Tele Hot-Rails (I was thinking about getting a Hot Stack), and a Vintage Stack, all by Seymour Duncan, from an old tele I got rid of, that COULD go in this axe. Think I should go for it? I just want maximum versatility.

I use a tele for high gain, with singles, and you only hear the buzz when you aren't playing otherwise. You can go with a hum cancelling pickup, both Duncan and Dimarzio make really good ones, or learn to work the volume knob/pedal.

I'm a big fan of the Fender MiM Teles. Don't overlook them, you could potentially save some money but still get an incredible playing Tele.
Mine is a 2004 black body/black pickguard MiM Fender with a one piece maple neck and board. Six "block" saddles with a SD Tele Hotrail humbucker in the bridge.
Goes from clean country to mean metal in an instant.

HERES MINE

1952 Twat Rod Tele with Nitro finish and Ash body and Maple neck...

THIS TELE IS TEH SHIZZZZZZZZ!!!

Very balanced and warm sounding...

Sunds totaly vintage and modern, rocks hard and can make a tear roll down yer cheek all at the same time

Also, the stock Duncan pup in the neck is SICK BOY...

I pick this guitar up and it's on for hours on end...

I hated Tele's before I stumbled onto this axe for real...

JUSY BUY THIS AND FORGET ABOUT EVERY THING ELSE!!!

You sir, must have lucked out and got a good one!

I've played a bunch of MIM, deluxe series, FSR series, etc. They all felt like boat-anchors, sounded thuddy, and the poly finish was a mile thick.

I have a rosewood fender tele (yeah, MIM) that is pretty sweet - I put a tele JB rail in the bridge, it killed the tele bridge 'spank' tone but I still get the cool neck tones. Really, a tele bridge pickup through most amps is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me - WAY too bright.

Its been a long time since I played a real tele, but I thought the bridge single coil pickup on a tele was supposed to be a much different experience than a bridge single coil on a strat. I am generally not a fan of just using the bridge SC pickup on a strat alone, generally sounds too bright, thin, and washed out, it does cut well though.

Some tele's are too bright and twangy for me too. I sat at a music store and played everyone they had (cheapos to expensive) the road worn model had single coil like balls and twang on the bridge but was smooth at the same time. It totally was the best sounding one for me...and played as good as the expensive ones.

The Deluxe Fenders play great IMO, but I didn't like the S1 switching or SCN pickups either.

If you're looking for a tele bridge pickup with balls that still retains a lot of the tele spank look into the Rio Grande Half Breed. :)

I picked up this Tele earlier this Spring when I was in Japan. I absolutely love it. I switched out the pickups for Bareknuckle Piledrivers, I can't recommend them enough especially if you want your guitar to still sound like a Tele but want to use it with a high gain amp/tone. I take care of some VERY nice Teles on the road (real '55, various custom shop relics @ $3k each) and my Tele hangs with them easily.
