Lifting the fuzzy blanket from a Big Muff

I've got two mods in my NYC Big Muff now, the Tone Bypass mode and the Tone Wicker mod. The Tone Bypass takes the tone circuit out of the equation and introduces more lows and mids. The Tone Wicker bypasses caps on the transistor stages negative feedback loops unleashing the high frequencies that are usually shunted within the pedal itself. The mod sounds nice, but I bought my BMP for that old school, gnarled up, burping blanket of fuzz... I've got other OD's and the like to give me more of a traditional sound. But ya, for me I love the burbling gargling sound of the BMP as is - its signature tone.

What version BMP do you have?

The recent one - the white and green stomp with Tone Wicker... I had an old school one, not sure what vintage, but it got pinched years ago... This one does alright - still not the same as the old beater I had (I mean this thing was from the 70's and was a hand-me-down from a friend's older sister's boyfriend who was in a great band at the time) but good nonetheless.

Oh cool cool. The switches that I installed on my NYC version are identical to the switches that come stock with your version. I already had the Tone Bypass mod installed before I realized they even had a version like that. Had the NYC for a few years and never really used it except for when I was going for a really extreme tone. Now with these mods I can actually see making it a more permanent member of my pedalboard.

Word on the street is the older version Muff's are the best sounding ones. I really want to try building one of those GGG kits 'Ram's Head' build, which is a replica of the early 70's Muff (with the EH sheep's head logo on the bottom right hand side of the faceplate, hence Ram's Head). I'll still keep the NYC muff though cause nothing replaces that signature bass rumble sound. To me that is the one that sounds best. Any idea if it was one of those which you used to use?

Not really sure - it was circa 70's though for sure. The metal was so tarnished it took on a brassy orange color. It was really PHAT sounding and burbled like tasty mud (if that makes ANY sense whatsoever ). It was definitely an original from the early releases - I tried checking it out on their website or that other website that has ALL the info on the various iterations of the pedal (http://www.kitrae.net/music/music_big_muff.html), but I just can't remember. Probably a V3??? I wanted to buy an oldie off ePay, but wasn't sure which one it was. This new one is all good though, not the same, but still pretty phat sounding... I had a shitload of these vintage pedals gifted to me as I guess the guitarists in the band suddenly went BOSS and Ibby when they all came out in the 80's... Now I look at some of these boutique pedal sites online and the 'trash' they were gifting me is like $300 to $500 a pedal - and I can't for the life of me find where the bag of pedals went since I moved out from my parents place, oh, some 20+ years ago

I think overall, bang for the buck, EHX makes some killer stuff.

OMG! I don't know what that is, but I love the labels on the knobs and switches!
