That is helluva lot of pickups, no? :)

Sounds absolutely massive and great.

Hey James,

Do you use attenuators before or after pres? What do you use if so?

Fucking massive and brutal!! Great tone. Any suggestion how my VH4 can come close to that
tone in terms of settings / EQing?

Nothing just mic>pre>convertor>protools

I don't own a VH4 but I played both a few times before I went with the Herbert, the VH4 didn't seem to saturate the same way. Maybe I wasn't using the prime setting but the VH4 seemed different, so I don't know if you can get it to sound like a Herbert. Peter would know.

Where is your master & channel volume at?

I use atty with a lot of reduction between the mic & pre and I still find it hotter than I'd prefer. What pre? Do you think this could be Pacifica related?

I have a vintage Neve 1073 with the 421, I think the volume is at 40, it's a step knob. And I have a vintage API 312 with the 57 and the volume is around 10 o'clock. The pacifica has a built in pad you can use, I only usually need it on drums. Guitars are usually ok with out stepping down the gain. You may have gain structure issues somewhere else or it could be your convertors.

Well, the thing is that if I remove the pad before the Pacifica's the input distorts like a mother*****r. I track the Herbert loud, but still not as loud as I wish it was. I can't stand the pads on the Pacifica, they really cripple the sound to my ear. There is not much in the chain really: mic->atty->pre->converter (RME ADI-8DS).
So where is your Herbert's master & volume at? I'm sorry if I missed it.

My Herbert's about half way up. Yeah I'm not a fan of the pad either. Have you called Peter at A Designs and asked him? He's a great guy and one of my good friends. I'd try that. I don't use my Pacifica much on heavy guitars so I can't tell you one way or another. I will test mine later with my Herbert.

whoa mind blowing dude!

was there a fancy pickup cavity on that LP? - i.e. did the pickup merely 'plug into' the guitar? i know Gibson had an edition where one could swap out a humbucker or a p90 pickup very easily. it came with a pair of each - the pickups mated with the body via magnets on the bottoms of the pickup and at the bottom of the pickup route as well, iirc. the name escapes me though,,,,,

judging by the solder station near your guitar-'techminator' im going to assume that they were wired in the old fashioned way. which is insane!
