So, I'm looking at a photo of my buddy who is in the middle of recording guitar for his upcoming album, and there is a picture of him sitting next to several amps - one of which is his old block logo 5150. I notice that something looks different about it, and then I realize that the front panel is black with white lettering/numbers!? Apparently, UNDER the silver faceplate on the 5150 is this black panel. He told me he was working on the amp one day and the silver panel came off, and underneath was this black front with white silkscreening. Kinda like discovering a painting under a painting!

Did you guys know this!?

Here's the photo. The 5150 is in the lower right corner, with the "GMC" logo on it.

i have never heard of that before. it looks kool though with the black face/white lettering

I had my silver panel off of my sig head and it's not like that

Bummer because I like the way that looks

Interesting, as I have an early block letter myself. Looks very "Soldano"...I dig it.

That looks like an aftermarket job to me...But who knows.

looks awesome like that, might be some of the really early serial numbers or something?

That could be that it is just the early ones. I wouldnt mind finding one like that if it is indeed something peavey did from the factory

I had a block letter that dated to september of 1992, they were not released until march of that year, in 1991 they toured the 5150 series with For unlawful carnal knowledge. I had the back cover off and it was definitely not white silk-screened on black. I have heard many rumors, but this one is new to me.

That GMC logo on there with the all black looks badass. I just remembered my bro has a GMC logo lying around somewhere :D

yeah the GMC logo makes the amp

looks like a truck bearing down on you

Hmmm...

Never heard of this. Looks pretty cool though-definitely dig it.
