I was there last night. Great show. I went into it trying to keep an open mind. It was a great night of music and entertainment. James actually sounded pretty darned good. At least being in the audience. Fantastic lighting and effects.
Ya, he's always sounded great when I've seen them. Kirk and Zakk Wylde seem to be the only 2 guitarists who actually get worse with age, instead of better.

When they switched over to diezels it just ...doesn't sounds right to me. I dunno. Maybe it's just me.

...it's not just you. I feel the same way.

AxeFX? I heard they switched over but not sure...maybe someone is better authority on this

Metallica the last decade or so live has been a little iffy... But as they're finishing a new album (and hopefully tour) I'm very impressed by this show... Especially James. Holy shit dude, whatever you've been doing to help your voice keep it up, the best I've heard it in a long time

And I'm glad Metallica is still around doing shows, I was born at the tail end of their Black Album tour so I never got to see any version of Metallica live yet... And if they play like this and their set is their "hits" with stuff like Ride the Lightning and Battery thrown in I'll be very happy to see them the next time they roll through Salt Lake. It's been nearly a decade since they were last here

Yeah they've been all AxeFx for at least 2 years now.

5? Elite albums....

OK all just IMO..

4. Justice can get tiresome musically and sonically but has some great moments. Add the great parts to the original Garage Days and that makes 4. I just can't bare to watch them live anymore and it's been years. I'm not going to bash performances as they've wavered from good to bad. Just sonically they've lost everything I liked about them. They've gotten a pass for many years because of the epic contribution they made in the 80's but I can't jump on this kumbayah train of joy of their continuous rockin'. I don't begrudge them or you guys who still like them anything but they've become tired and barely a shadow of a great band to me.

Your opinion is your own however as far as the history of metal goes, from Kill em all to the black album they created legendary music. I am not saying the albums are "elite" but let's look at it. Kill em all stood above the other albums of it's time and it still holds weight today, it helped start a movement. Ride the lightning was the beginning of their breaking away from the pack, how you suggest that it's not a terrific album is ridiculous. Master of puppets was elite from start to finish. Justice took another direction and yes, it does get long winded at times but they proved their musicianship on that record was elite at the time for the era. The black album to this day is one of the best sounding albums ever recorded.

Say what you want but there's a lot that wouldn't be today without those albums.

James's voice sounds good, and his energy is still great. But those guitar tones are terrible. Flat and dimensionless. Kirk's lead tone on Nothing Else Matters is especially pitiful. I want to believe in AxeFX but this doesn't help.

You missed my point. Re-read my post and you'll get I'm saying the Black Album (#5) to be considered one of their Elite is ridiculous. Of course the First 3 are Epic, which is why I said if you combine the good parts of Justice with GD you would have 4 total Elite albums.

I was there too! Agree it was a great show, especially considering it was a one off, not in the middle of a tour.

The best moment for me was after the show when a teenage kid and his sister sitting behind me told their dad that they had their doubts but Metallica killed the Foo Fighters concert.

That's awesome!!!

I was at the show and it was a kick ass show in our city. Still feels like a 16 year old every time I see them play.

I always disliked when people hated on Metallica for what they are now vs. the 80's. Obviously its not going to be as intense or the song writing as good, but its nice to see that they are performing at a pretty decent level this far into their careers (not to mention still around at all). I'd gladly go see them again next time they come around for their "greatest hits" tour.

Nothing from Death Magnetic. James' ESP V is cool.
I was wondering when someone would chime in and DM loved it but they played the hits
