Load box + IR's for recording?

Anyone using a THD Hotplate in the load setting, with a line out to your interface, and a VST + Impulse response for recording? If so, how do you like it? (or dislike it)

Kick ass for low/no volume recording but obviously not the same as traditional micing.

Infinitely, as it retains all of the dynamic of the true tube preamp.

Dont know if you already have the Hot Plate or not, bit in case you dont, the Countryman Type 85 has a speaker function where it can do the same thing as the Hot Plate in this equation, but its cheaper.

I have not loaded down an amp yet but have used Guitar Tube Preamps into IRs and even the Cab Impulses of modelers and it works very well.

One of the reasons modeling works at all is 'cause of the Cab Sims AND I prefer replacing the models with a real tube preamp.

For important tracks , it's also possible to Mic a studio monitor near the woofer at low volume while recording and put that on a separate track to be mixed in at mixdown etc.

This is variation of an old Studio trick where you record , playing in the control room and play next to the Monitors for feedback and resonance effects , even when micing a cab.

Anyway , even adding a small amount of micing ( even at very low volume ) can add a LOT to a direct track , once you get good at it.

Cab IRs LOVE Tube Preamps and Amps loaded down to line level as input.

I have the Palmer PGA-04 ADIG that loads the amp and has a speaker eq that you can dial in for silent recording. I have a THD hot plate but havent tried it that way yet.

Think you can do it with the Palmer 03 also, not sure.

I already have a THD and have not used it for direct in off a tube amp though. I'll get to try it this afternoon, and already downloaded some cab simulators. It would be cool for once if I didn't have to buy a new piece of gear to do what I want to do.

I used Redwirez for a whole album, everything was done through a Mesa 4x12 impulse set. The Redwirez are very highly regarded, and sounded much better than anything else I demoed. They really are in a league of their own. Unless you have access to a great cab, a great room, a couple of great mics and pres, and the time and knowledge to set it all up, you will be MUCH better served by just using some good impulses. Unless I'll be working on a very high profile project, I won't use the traditional micing again.

I tried three different sets of IR plug-in's and the Redwirez blew them all away with the single cab that they offer as a demo.

For now, I'm ok without an AxeFX as running my VHT > THD Hotplate > Garage Band with the Redwirez IR is totally doing it!
